T43 1871-4BU | Modem dial & handshake sounds under W7

#1 Post by CeeBee » Sat May 17, 2014 6:26 am

The modem (In-Build Conexant ICH AC '97) works (send/receive) under Windows 7, but, the dial and modem handshake sounds are gone. Maybe nostalgic, however, I liked the 'noises' I had when using the modem under XP. And it helped me to diagnose problems when connecting while traveling.

The below is from the modem log. Anything in there which would turn off the above sounds? To be sure, I added L3M1 to the user initialization commands:

Code: Select all

- Passthrough On
- Passthrough Off
- 115200,8,N,1, ctsfl=1, rtsctl=2
- Initializing modem.
- Send: AT<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
- Send: AT&FE0V1S0=0&C1&D2+MR=2;+DR=1;+ER=1;W2<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
- Send: ATS7=60S30=0L3M1+ES=3,0,2;+DS=3;+IFC=2,2;X4<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
- Sending user initialization commands.
- Send: ATL3M1S11=65<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
- Waiting for a call.
- Send: at+vcid=1<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
- Send: ATS0=0<cr>
- Interpreted response: OK
Any suggestions on how to get the dial-handshake sounds back? Or, maybe the W7 driver provided by Microsoft doesn't provide for this nostalgic stuff?! Thanks

Since I forgot all my Hayes AT-command set options, I had to Google a reference. L3 (maximum volume) and M1 (enable speaker until carrier detect) should do what you want. At this point, I'd look into Windows Volume/Sound settings to see if there's something that's been muted. Since the capability to hear the handshaking is present with XP, I'd assume (maybe a mistake?) that would have been ported to the W7 driver.

edit: Moved thread from T4x forum as this appears to be more of a Windows 7 issue. Also removed duplicate thread that was already in the W7 forum.

Thanks rkawakami!

I'm out of touch with AT-commands as well, however, I still recall when I installed my Hayes 2400 modem in my PS/2 50Z computer (with a 286/10MHz CPU, 1Mb Ram and 30Mb drive). I think my first connection was by Telnet to some University. Good ol' times!
L3 (maximum volume) and M1 (enable speaker until carrier detect) should do what you want. At this point, I'd look into Windows Volume/Sound settings to see if there's something that's been muted.
I have checked everywhere, however, can't find any volume/sound entry which is muted or relevant to modem, dial-up, phone line or whatever. I'm at a loss .. and that's why I had hoped that other T43 users, now running W7, would pitch in with their experience. So, let's keep this thread in the T4x forum for now...

That was my assumption too, but, I have read somewhere that some Microsoft modem drivers won't offer connection sounds. True or not, I don't know. I'm reluctant to install an old T43 modem driver at this time...

It maybe a long shot, but try going into Device Manager, then Modem, then Properties. Under the Advance tab trying entering..... AT&FM1L3 in the Extra Initialization Command box. You may have to access this as Administrator to to do and a reboot for it to take effect.
My Laptop Collection:
IdeaPad Z570, 8gb RAM & Win 7 Home Premium / Win 8.1 Pro
Toshiba A75-S206, 1.5gb RAM & Windows 7 Home Premium
ThinkPad T-22 (Formerly a T-20), 512mb RAM & Win XP Pro

Been there, done that. One of the 1st things I tried. Also ATZ and other combinations. Copied Hyperterminal from XP and no difference when trying to connect via the modem. No sounds. Otherwise, I have no problems with sounds .. Skype works fine and so does TeamViewer. But, that has nothing to do with the modem of course...

Noted elsewhere that quite a few people (with different hardware) have similar problems after migrating from XP to W7. It all worked great under XP .. if it ain't broke, don't fix it doesn't apply to MS, unfortunately. Thanks anyway...

After being a dormant thread for 2+ years I had to use my built in modem to send/receive fax messages for the past couple of days. Works fine, except the speakers are still silent during connect! This in spite of the fact that I installed "IBM ThinkPad Integrated 56K Modem Software 7.58.00.00" (78mv05ww.exe).

I still have the volume cranked up to max in (device manager) modem properties and the extra setting is L3 M1 .. as before. Still no connect speaker sound.

The modem log looks like this:

Any suggestion on how to get the connect noise (speaker) back working? Could be that it doesn't work under W7 and if so .. so be it. Anything from the above which looks funny? Anything I missed? Thanks!
