Slow booting
Slow booting
Hi,
In my new Thinkpad, I see that there are lot of programs load during start-up on checking with msconfig. Here is the list
BLOG rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\BatLogEx.DLL,StartBattLog
ISUSScheduler "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
PWRMGRTR rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\PWRMGRTR.DLL,PwrMgrBkGndMonitor
Apoint Alps Electric Co., Ltd. C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe
AMSG LENOVO C:\Program Files\ThinkVantage\AMSG\Amsg.exe /startup
ACTray Lenovo C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\ACTray.exe
ACWLIcon Lenovo C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\ACWLIcon.exe
AwaySch Lenovo Group Limited C:\Program Files\Lenovo\AwayTask\AwaySch.EXE
cssauth Lenovo Group Limited "C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\cssauth.exe" silent
LPManager Lenovo Group Limited C:\PROGRA~1\THINKV~1\PrdCtr\LPMGR.exe
TPFNF7 Lenovo Group Limited C:\Program Files\Lenovo\NPDIRECT\TPFNF7SP.exe /r
TPHOTKEY Lenovo Group Limited C:\Program Files\Lenovo\HOTKEY\TPOSDSVC.exe
TVT Scheduler Proxy Lenovo Group Limited C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lenovo\Scheduler\scheduler_proxy.exe
EZEJMNAP Lenovo Group Ltd. C:\PROGRA~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\EzEjMnAp.Exe
TpShocks Lenovo. TpShocks.exe
I don't think all of these services are required to be up, could some-one tell me what all are bare-minimum required to be loaded during start-up ?
Thanks

Re: Slow booting
Welcome to the forums.
None of it is required, but some of it is important to properly utilize certain functions of the laptop. Others are utilities that you can find useful (and then should keep the services) or not (and then you can get rid of them).
This is my mapping:

p10_sri wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2017 2:46 amBLOG Battery/power management - keep
ISUSScheduler ???
PWRMGRTR Battery/power management - keep
Apoint Touchpad - keep
AMSG Message / spam service - can get rid of
ACTray Lenovo Access Connections - keep if you use it, get rid of it otherwise
ACWLIcon Lenovo Access Connections - keep if you use it, get rid of it otherwise
AwaySch Away scheduler - probably useless
cssauth Client Security Solution - keep if you use it, get rid of it otherwise
LPManager Productivity Center - keep if you use it, get rid of it otherwise
TPFNF7 Hotkey service - keep
TPHOTKEY Hotkey service - keep
TVT Scheduler Proxy Update scheduler - I would get rid of it, it's mostly annoying
EZEJMNAP Hotkey service - keep
TpShocks Active Protection Service for hard drives - keep if you have a mechanical hard drive
If you decide that you do not want a particular piece of software (like Access Connections), I would suggest that you just uninstall it / configure not to run via its UI, if possible, instead of manually messing with startup items. However, there is no harm in temporary disabling selected services via MSCONFIG, and run this way for a while to see if there are any negative effects.

Re: Slow booting
You can change some or all of those to a 'delayed startup' in the Task manager or Services. I can't remember which now as I haven't had to use it in awhile. It will help speed up the boot.

Re: Slow booting
Hello doc,
I tried the steps outlined by you, but noticed that the power manager utility hangs when I disabled all the items mentioned by you. After enabling them 1 by 1 I noticed that the power manager icon only shows up once I enabled "access connections main service" from services tab in msconfig to enable power manager icon to show up.
What does it means ? Does that mean that I can't disable / remove access connections ?
Thanks

Re: Slow booting
I don't even have Access Connections installed on any of my laptops, and I never encountered issues with Power Manager icon not showing.
Perhaps installing Access Connections creates some dependency? If you really don't plan to use it, I suggest uninstalling it altogether. You can always get it back later.

Re: Slow booting
hmm.. ok for the time being I will keep all the items disabled and observe for a couple of days to check if everything is functioning alright. Then I will un-install
Thanks

Re: Slow booting
Try setting to "Manual" so that the service can still be started if its needed.
In the Task manager, go to the "Services" tab and at the bottom of the pane you'll see a link to "Open Services" or something like that. You can get to it through "Administrative Tools" too.
You can right click a service and access the options for them in there.

Re: Slow booting
Thanks TankPad for being considerate and telling details about how to access the settings.
Re: Slow booting
Hello,
I have noticed that the CPU usage is generally very high in the range of 70% to 90% whenever I open task manager and it considerably drops down after few seconds to 15-20% when I keep Task Manager open for some time. This behavior is observed even when only 1 or 2 apps are open or even browser is running.
How can I fix that ? what could be the reason ?
Thanks
