Anybody know which Slic.BIN file is used for which Laptop

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Fri Jun 22, 2018 8:49 am

The Slic in the BIOS to auto-activate Vista (Slic2.0) and W7 (Slic2.1) consists of a certificate, such as LENOVO.xrm-ms
and a BIN file, with names such as LENOVO-TP-6D.BIN or LENOVO-TC-5K.BIN or LENOVO-TP-7Y.BIN, etc. etc.

Is there a list anywhere, that tells which BIN-file is for which Lenovo laptop model?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Windows installation was made easy thanks to Daz's Loader and the Digital_river Archive

If you have a Lenovo laptop (or even an older IBM manufactured one) and it's got a Windows license on it, I can't comprehend the point of using tools like Daz Loader which is obviously a tool to bypass/cheat/crack/hack the Windows activation technologies aka "warez" (and I'm surprised you'd mention or even say such a thing around here considering) to make use of the OSes on the already licensed hardware.

It never ceases to amaze me how far over the line some folks will go to "stick it to Microsoft" even considering the hardware they purchase is or was already licensed for use with Windows (whatever version) to begin with. :P

I was trying to get a Lenovo Ideapad Y550 with Vista upgraded to W7, hence the Slic question.
I'm sure there are plenty oddball Lenovo laptops around, that could still continue to be useful, if one uses the above links.
Adding Slic to the BIOS has been discussed here for many years...

Well yeah, adding a SLIC table to a BIOS is one thing and even Lenovo wouldn't more than likely give a darn about that, but using Daz Loader, that's a whole different thing altogether. :D

I dont think loaders that use the slic in the bios is in any way "cheating".

If you have a T61 that never come with Win7 then its a grey area but its one that no one cares about since even Lenovo's own staff admitted to using Middleton. And if you're talking about 10yr old hardware on a 10yr old operating system then its very much the opposite of low hanging fruit... do what you want.

If you have T400 or newer then it already has slic 2.1 in the bios and if you can see the COA and you match it to the digital river distro with the loader then I dont see an issue. You are entitled to use that version of windows and using a loader is much more convenient than punching in a key.

If your COA has rubbed off then I feel that's a grey area too but again, I dont see the harm in it.

If you're adding a SLIC to a T43 then all power to you.

Its not really about sticking it to Microsoft... at this point they dont care if you're doing this. I think people just want the most convenience and slics and loaders is that.

I have a dim view of software slash mbr loaders but eh... if it helps then I'm happy.

One time I was forced to insert a SLIC table in the BIOS because:

The laptop original came with Win 7 preinstalled. Its system board died within the warranty period, but the replacement board lacked the SLIC. It took 1 month for the service center to return the laptop, and my dad (who owns said laptop) didn't want to wait another month (or more) for another board, so I was forced to research and modify the BIOS myself.

Pretty nerve-wracking since there's a fair chance of bricking the board.

If you don't care about Lenovo's bloatware, and/or you don't have (or want to use) Lenovo Recovery Disks,
you'd be surprised at the difference between installing W7-Pro/SP1 64-bit from Digitalriver or Lenovo.
Installation was on a Lenovo Ideapad Y550 with 'classic' HDD (160GB, 5400rpm).

Lenovo used THREE DVDs with W7 plus tons of drivers/bloatware (T420 Recovery disks).
For some reason that HDD died while installing various missing drivers and additional programs.

As I had a spare, identical HDD lying around, I used that.
Not wanting to waste so much time again, I decided to try something else and use the other W7 option.
Digitalriver used just ONE DVD with only W7, nothing else.
It only missed ONE driver, for some Realtek wifi card.

Lenovo install: changing DVDs twice, duration: almost FOUR hours!
Then you need to waste more time uninstalling Lenovo's bloatware and finding missing drivers.

Digitalriver install: less than ONE hour.
No further cleaning up required.
That's a time-saver of THREE hours!

No Windows updates are to be installed ever, they are fully blocked.

On both occasions I only updated IE (8 or 9) to IE11, installed the latest Chrome and Firefox browsers, as well as MSE antivirus.
This laptop belongs to a local garage, where the owner only checks a few websites for used-car auctions, but mostly uses it for writing invoices and checking car-manuals.
(The amount of oil or grease on that machine was astonishing!)

I am trying to get Win7 going on one of my T61s with Middleton bios. My standard Win 7 download will not activate so can anyone help me to get hold of the necessary files to activate Windows on this Thinkpad. I have used Winloader before successfully but would like to try using the Slic2.1 tables this time.

Middleton's BIOS installs Lenovo's Slic2.1.
With that you need to also install any Lenovo W7-Pro Recovery set, not a 'straight' M$ one.

Which I don't have hence my request: where do I get this from? or where can I get just the certificate and bin files if they would work on their own that is.
