No more W7 support for PIII machines as of June 2018

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Sun Jun 24, 2018 7:53 am

If you have a machine with Pentium III CPU, that runs W7, you are out of luck early.
As of June 2018, Micro $hafts you by no longer updating CPUs without SSE2 support.

All's well that ends well.....

As the linked article states, anyone running 18-year old PC hardware has done amazingly well...

HOWEVER....

My T23 can STILL do my finances in Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, compose my letters in Wordperfect, and (slowly) compile a database in dBase 3+ ( and dBase4) :D

(For you youngsters, when I started computing in the mid-late 1980's these were the NUMERO UNO office programs, and woe be to anyone who couldn't be proficient in at least one or two of them!) How times change!

Regards.

I think there would be quite a few Windows 7 users who have disabled Updates already who can run SSE2 instruction sets just fine.

Thinking you are safer because you install offerings from MS may not always be the best policy especially as we approach EOL. YMMV

FYI: on all my machines with W7 I have stopped M$ updates a few years ago!

This also includes AMD K7-based CPUs like the first Athlons, Durons, and Semprons.

Amusingly enough, one of my neighbors has a still-running one. It had problems with newer versions of Skype due to lacking SSE2.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
