Windows 7 64-bit and 3GB hibernation file?

#1 Post by basketb » Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:11 am

Probably the stupidest question I have posted on this forum so far, but why is the size of my hibernation file in Windows 7 64-bit only 3GB when my T61p has 4GB of RAM?

Could it be because of Hybrid Sleep :?:

Have you disabled hibernation? If not, why would you want to remove that file?

My guess is that Windows 7 bases the hibernation file on only the memory actively being used. Maybe only 3 GB contained data?

About removing the hibernation file using the Disk Cleanup tool, maybe you need need to deactivate hibernation first. Start an elevated command prompt (start, all programs, accessories, right-click Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator") and type in

powercfg /hibernate off

exit

Then try the cleanup tool again and select the hibernation file. See if it'll get deleted.

On my ThinkPad with 1 GB of RAM the hibernation file is a little over 0.7 GB. A possible reason is that Windows may compress the content of RAM when writing it to the hibernation file. Linux does this.

well :??: the thing is that my HDD is 100GB and i have made a 30% partition for my primary OS which i keep changing regularly
and i have made another partition for my docs and stuff..so i guess i have to be a little considerate in the disk space in my C: drive!!

I believe his point was that maybe you cannot remove the hibernation file if you haven´t disabled hibernation before. That must be something different from Vista I guess.

Probably :) In Vista you don´t have to disable hibernation (by some reg hacks or whatever) in order to be able to remove the hibernation file...
