WWAN in X300 under Windows 7 Beta?
WWAN in X300 under Windows 7 Beta?
Hello,
I've recently picked up the Windows 7 Beta and installed it on my X300. So far I definetly like the performance a lot more than what Vista delivered on the machine and I'm thinking about moving completely on Win 7 (I've also installed an XP partition on the machine for productivity work)
The only thing I haven't been able to accomplish is to get the built-in Sierra WWAN (UMTS/3G) module working. I've tried the driver from Lenovo's web site but although installation runs through without any errors the module is not working.
Symptoms are a "not working" entry for the "Mini Card" in the device manager and an error message from the ThinkVantage Mobile Broadband application telling me that the switch for all radios (the one in the back) is off - although WLAN is working without any problems.
Did anyone find a way to get the module working or is the someone who can make something out of my description?
Any help greatly appreciated, cheers,
Alex

I got my Sierra Wireless 860 AirCard working in Windows 7 Beta by installing 3G Watcher from Sierra Wireless.

Hi Zender,
thanks for the tip. Tried it and installed, but did not work. Seems like my machine has the mc8755 installed and won't work with the 8775 drivers.
Access Connections can't turn the radio "on" and if I try to connect it fails telling me (in the "Help Me Fix This" dialog) that the cause is "Unsupported WAN device" error code 058...
You don't happen to have such a link for the mc8755?
Thanks, cheers,
Alex

You cannot have MC8755 in X300 unless you have a BIOS patched to allow that. Do you?

Re: WWAN in X300 under Windows 7 Beta?
Not to my knowledge, no.
I've looked up the hardware configuration for my model (ThinkPad X300 6478-15G) on the Lenovo website and there it says that the installed HSDPA module is the 8755:
Networking
* Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
* Sierra Wireless EV-DO Wireless WAN Mini PCI Express Adapter
* Sierra Wireless MC8755 PCI Express MiniCard
* Wireless USB PCI Express Half-Mini Card
Odd....

I think I've seen that typo in some X300 configs, it's probably just that.
If you try updating driver manually in device manager - it should be under USB devices (I haven't seen W7, I hope it didn't get renamed), at each decision say you'll choose manually, and pointing it to the appropriate location from archive I've linked - does it help anything?

Back again after a nasty case of Windows Installer not working any more...
Well, I finally was able to install it with the help of the tip from GomJabbar and using 3G Watcher from Sierra Wireless - thanks for that!!
Cheers,
Alex

I was browsing Microsoft's TechNet site and ran across the following information which may be helpful for some.

· Installation failure of the mobile broadband software

· Unable to connect to the internet
All mobile broadband devices that connect to the internet with Windows Vista should continue with Windows7.
