Installation problem in Thinkpad Z60t

#1 Post by Louis » Sun Jan 25, 2009 3:33 pm

Hey guys,
I was wondering if any have run into this issue. I installed Windows 7 beta flawlessly on my desktop, but when i tried to install it on my thinkpad Z60t, it starts ok. Copies temporary files, starts setup, goes online to search for updates, checks compatibility but once you get to "Copying windows files" around 34% (749 of 2204MB copied) it just hangs there. DVD rom eventually stops spinning and i get an error saying "the drive is not ready for use, its door may be open. please check drive d: and make sure that the disk is inserted and the door is closed" Of course...drive has not been touched and it is closed.
I have tried using a different DVD image, also tried a clean install, upgrade from Vista, and the result is the same. I reinstalled Vista itself and it installed with no problems so it is not the DVD rom drive and the DVD was used on my desktop without issues so the DVD is ok as well.
Could it be just incompatibility with the Z60/ dvd drive? While it's hanging at 34% there is harddrive activity (light blinks) for about 2 min. then no activity and a few minutes later the error appears.

I had the same problem with my T43 ThinkPad. I restarted setup and this time I removed the partition and then let the install proceed. This time everything went well except for the fingerprint reader, wifi, altra nav, bluetooth, etc. I then used the Thinkvantage update to get everything else.

The Windows 7 runs good with just 1 MB of memory and the Intel graphics chip. Several bugs exist including a freezeup of the performance test.

Which partition did you remove? I tried both an upgrade (failed) and clean install...the clean install i noticed it creates a 300MB partition automatically for files... I tried deleting that partition but it would create it again automatically so i let it be.
Is that the partition you mention? Did you upgrade from vista or clean install?
Regardless, the clean install failed in the same way, only difference was that it failed in Expanding files instead of copying files....but the error is the same..

Try to delete both partitions...you will end up with just one. Also, I only did a clean install since it won't upgrade XP.

Good luck...Bill

Sounds odd. W7b installed fine on my Z60t from an image burned to DVD-RW. It's working perfectly and has done since I installed it. Sorry to hear of the troubles and hope you get them sorted soon.

@OP: How big was the partition you created for Win 7 :?:
IBM Lenovo Z61p | 15.4'' WUXGA | Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2x 2.16GHz | 4 GB Kingston HyperX | Hitachi 7K500 500 GB + WD 1TB (USB) | ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 | ThinkPad Atheros a/b/g | Analog Devices AD1981HD | Win 7 x86 + ArchLinux 2009.08 x64 (number crunching)

At the beginning of the install I deleted any existing partitions....i tried several things including creating one big partition consisting of my entire harddrive, it automatically created a smaller partition I guess for the files and then attempted to install on the remaining space. I also tried not creating any partitions, just dleting existing partitions an dletting it do its thing (again it automatically creates a small partition for files and attempts install on the remaining space.)

Just in case anyone was having this issue too...it seemed to be an issue with the beta version. I tried this again with the RC and it installed with no issues
