Windows 7 on T43p

#1 Post by Quicklite » Fri Feb 06, 2009 6:43 am

Finally installed Windows 7 on my T43p, I was rather disappointed by Vista which I installed yeaterday, but Windows 7 does seem impressive sofar.

Booting up is now noticible faster than on Vista; generally feels more smooth, and there is no BSOD at all; however, unlike windows vista, not everything works directly after install:

USB now works at USB full speed :( , when I installed vista, it was working at HI-speed, without any drivers. :?

The sound driver download from windows 7 update failed to work, while there is only XP driver from IBM, which also does not work. :(

Fingerprint app from IBM initially said it did not see the hardware, when I tried vista compatibility mode, it just crashed. I'm now trying to use the UPEK driver. Edit, this now works.

For any other T4x users, here is the link:

However, on the plus side, the stability of graphic drivers are now much better, where as in vista, I had trouble changing the frequency at all, I now can overclock more than I was able to on XP, via Ati tool.

How did you manage that? According to techpowerup ATItool works only on Windows 2000/XP/2003 (including x64). It doesn´t work for me on Vista, so I don´t expect it to work for me on Win 7.

In the beta version, they do support it; however, in older, stable version, I don't think it does. ATitool 0.27 beta 1 introduced support for vista, since most drivers for vista works on windows 7, I don't see a problem. 0.27 Beta 4 is the latest I think.

Here, vista is listed as supported, meaning it ought to work with 7 without issues.

Oh, thanks a bunch, I didn´t notice the beta at all  I may try it out later just to see how it goes (generally I don´t overclock notebooks).

Wow, that´s quite some OC achievement. Try not to fry your T43p :). My Win 7 score is 4.2 (without OC), which is not much of a difference from your 3.9. What´s your score without oc?

Honestly, I didn´t expect to hear about underclocking :P but for those of us who don´t have switchable graphic, this might be indeed very helpful. Have you measured battery life when uc-ed?

I basically just got the laptop at the start of the week, and haven't ordered new battery yet.

Powerplay seem to downclock to 100/120 by default when away from AC already. However I just use ATi tool to underclock further to about 70/90 mhz to keep the laptop running cool, so far I only worked on desk with it, shall update when my 9 cell battery arrives...

Underclocking doesn't seem to have that much effect I think, I'm not sure whether underclocking or undervolting works better, shall look it up. Anyway, those WEI was done this morning at about 450/270, I haven't tried to refresh it yet. I think its 4.0 for aero experience at 400/250.

can anyone give me some help locating the audio driver? I'm going to try the one for T60, not sure how it will go though.

Sound worked for me out-of-the-box - or at least after Windows 7 Beta did the first update (don't remember). I have a T42 which uses the same sound chip as the T43.

Note the following. Not sure if this applies to Linux only or not.
Thinkwiki wrote:On some models (T40, T43p, ... R51e ...) audio is muted if either Headphone or Line Jack are unmuted. See also ALSA Wiki FAQ [1]. Also, if Headphone Sense or Line Jack Sense are unmuted audio is dead (R52, X40).
I see in Device Manager that the Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM AC '97 Audio Controller uses the following drivers:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ac97intc.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\drmk.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\portcls.sys

Make sure you have the hardware sound button unmuted, and the hardware volume control (buttons) turned up.

Update:

After loading all my programs, W7B seems to boot up slightly slower now, similar to vista; though the performance once everything is loaded, is just impeccable; there is some problems with loading sites like ebay without system freezing in firefox, however IE8 can easily bypass that problem.

I managed to resolve the problem with the USB by installing the intel chipset driver; and I finally got windows and thinkvantage update working, hope audio problem will be solved soon.

What I'll do now is order the highly hyped, Samsung HM160HC see how that fares, while sticking the 80GB drive into my T41 before getting rid of it; a 9 cell battery will be here soon. When I get the chance, I'll try to find a fast USB/express disk to enable turbo drive feature...

Thanks for the help :P
