64bit OS but my thinkpad shows only 3gb ram

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:40 pm

I am not sure where this topic belongs. I got a 64 bit Windows 7 on X300 but my thinkpad only shows Total Memory of 3061MB. Any ideas?

You sure you have 4 GBs (not 2+1) installed? Look under Control Panel -> System, there you should be able to find the complete amount of RAM installed.

Cheers,

Marin

EDIT: Sorry, I oversaw that you have Win 7 beta installed...

Hm, probably some reporting bug in task manager of the beta. If you have any heavy application (or some suitable benchmarking utility for the purpose), try to launch multiple instances of it to max the physical memory usage (green bar), you should be able to cross the 3 GBs if it´s only a reporting bug of the beta...

You can try Passmark BurnIn. It´s not exactly a benchmarking utility, but it should do for the purpose :)

Interesting reading! Though I have to disagree with the author that there isn´t much point in installing 8 GBs for "normal" users, it actually has...

Back on topic: Win 7 x64 should be able to use nearly all 4 GBs on the new machines (like X300) just like Vista x64 does, right? (I think 1 GB difference is pretty much for reserved addresses, besides, a X300 doesn´t have that "much" of hardware....)
