Tried to CLone hd with norton ghost 14

#1 Post by cl0ne » Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:41 pm

Im using windows 7 and wanted to transfer my hd to a bigger (500gb one). Currently using a T61. I used norton ghost 14 to clone the hd onto the new hd. All seems to be well until at 99% it gives me an error saying i do not have enough memory to continue, more specifically here is the error message:

Error EC8F17B3: Cannot complete copying of SW_Preload (C:\) drive. Error EC8F0409: Cannot copy source drive to destination location. Error EBAB00CC: Application unable to continue due to lack of memory.
Details: 0xEBAB00CC
Source: Norton Ghost

I created 3 different partitions on the new 500gb and the destination partition for the clonehd has 97gb in it. The current hd I am using has only 65 gb used and 5gb free data. Afterwards the new destination drive does have a new name (SW_Preload) and it has all the datas of my current hd in it. I am afraid to swap the old one and try if the cloned hd with error works. How can i clone hd with norton without having that error? I seem to have enough harddrive space for the cloning. Thanks!

Please don´t double-post! Win 7 is still in beta, so it can´t be expected that everything will work properly on it ;) I have seen the lack-of-memory problem before on Win 7 32-bit. I don´t experience it with WIn 7 x64. Have you applied all recent updates for Win 7. Try rebooting and then start again the cloning process.

Try running Norton Ghost in XP- or Vista-compatible mode (I don´t believe this will help, but at least it´s worth a try).

I would but the only OS on this computer is windows 7 which i want to clone to avoid having to reinstall everything from scratch again.

Sorry, I might have been unclear. I meant something else: start menu -> All programs -> Norton Ghost (the shortcut pointing to the exe) -> right click -> properties -> compatibility tab

Sorry, i went ahead and used another program called "XXclone" and successfully cloned the hd but with one exception. The bootsector is either bad or not there =(. I loaded the new harddrive into the T61 and booted it up. It gave me a missing NTLDR message. I took it out and am using the old hd for now. Is there anyway to fix the ntldr while its connected externally via usb?

If you have the Win 7 DVD, boot from it and perform a startup repair. Actually, if you choose the repair option, it might be able to automatically find and repair the problem. In fact, Win 7 seems to have pretty different bootloader from vista. A few days ago I had some linux installed in dual-boot configuration with GRUB as bootloader (chain loading), I booted in Win 7 and simply wiped out the linux with Acronis Disk Director and added the freed up space to the existing windows partition. No big deal, but after after rebooting I expected some error from GRUB because of the missing Linux. Instead of that my ThinkPad booted straight into Win 7 without any error or need to repair the bootloader. This wasn´t the case with the same linux and Vista... Sorry for the extra info
