Received the following in an email from Microsoft this morning.
On Tuesday, May 5 (PST), the RC will be available to everyone via our Customer Preview Program. As with the Beta, the Windows 7 RC Customer Preview Program is a broad public program that offers the RC free to anyone who wants to download it. It will be available at least through June 30, 2009, with no limits on the number of downloads or product keys available.

So you don’t need rush to make sure you get your copy. When you’re ready to download the RC, it’ll be waiting for you.

When I try to download WIN 7, it does not permit storing the download on disk for later installation - only downloading and installing at the same time. Anybody know how to download and save the files (I download on my desktop but I want to install and try it out on my T61p). Also, is there any way to install it without installing over an existing Vista installation?

Or is all this asking way too much of Microsoft???

You are downloading an ISO file not a true installable application. You should probably just let the download run what it needs to to save the ISO file.

You can setup a dual boot process on your machine to boot into Win 7 or Vista or you can upgrade your existing Vista partition.

I don't know what you are talking about. I just downloaded the .iso last night, burned it to a DVD, and installed it from the DVD this morning.

What browser/download manager are you using? I used IE8 with the M$ download manager as ActiveX installed, and it completed the .iso downloads without problems. I´m about to burn them and install it (but I have just run out of DVDs). BTW, I had problems in FF3 to save the .isos. Upon download completion, the download manager didn´t want to save the whole file, and the .iso files just disappeared together with any FF .part files from my download folder. And I´m sure they weren´t moved, but deleted as I got back free space. Not sure if this is related to your experience, I thought it was some FF/Win 7 bug as a result an AV installation that went wrong the other night on my system, but now when you mentioned this, I guess it might be somehow related to your problem.

True, I used IE. I believe I read somewhere else that the previous Beta 7 could only be downloaded with IE.

Using IE, I let the ActiveX Download Manager get installed. At the end of the download, it checks the integrity of the .iso before finishing. I waited a few minutes for the integrity check to finish, but since I was tired I went to bed before it did.

I tried to download the Windows 7 BETA with Firefox and it didn't work for me. I got more successful using IE.

I decided to give Firefox another shot with the RC. IIRC, the download page gave me a choice of an ActiveX and Java downloader and I went with Java. Luckily all worked well and soon I had the ISO in Vista's Downloads folder.

So it does work with Firefox.

Internet Explorer 8. When I click on the dowload icon, the only options in the download manager are "Install" and "Don't Install" (no "Save"). "Don't install" is just like "Cancel".

You have to install the Download Manager before the download can begin.

FWIW, I started from the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... nload.aspx

Yes, I know that but I figured out what was going on. After you press "Install" it then asks you to save it to disk (rather than having "save" as an option on the download menu). Must be Microsofts latest change-for-change's sake (sorry, "new feature")! I'm rolling now, however, downloading both the 32 and 64 bit bersions.

:)
