Found a working X41 laptop video driver!

If you play the sample video that comes with Windows 7 RC on a default installation on a X41 laptop you will find the video keeps playing for 10 to 15 seconds after the music stops. This is because the video driver is not working at normal speed.

I tried video drivers for other laptops that also use a Intel 915GM chipset and found that the one for a HP NC4200 works fine.

To install it just run the exe, let it fail to install, and then it will offer to install using recommended settings which will work.

With this fix it seems that Windows 7 RC works well with a X41 Laptop. Aero will still not work, but at least video is at full speed.

Any ideas on how to get Aero to work?

It's old news that Aero doesn't work with 915 graphics, since Intel has not released VDDM driver to support it.
However it runs just fine using official Intel driver for XP, without Aero though. Tested using Vista (RTM/SP1/SP2) on X41.

just wanted to say thx for the ftp upload of the driver, couldn't find the vista version for the intel 915 anywhere. Not tested yet but wanted to add that the recommended settings didn't come up when I ran the .exe, had to run setup again from the extract folder, then it failed and offered recommended settings.

Can you post your Windows 7 performance score using the HP driver?

x41 non tablet. I installed the hp driver and the wei is the same for the hp driver and the driver that I'm using, 6.14.10.4764 1/13/2007 from intel.

But, I ran pc wizard's direct x 3d vertex processing benchmark and this is what I got.

hp mine

texture 402 fps 411 fps
texture full screen 53 fps 47 fps
particles 3d 10 fps 10 fps
vertex 43 fps 49 fps
billboard 100 fps 119 fps

This is the best of 2 runs of each driver.

I think I'll keep mine for awhile.

I think he means the WEI (windows experience index). You can find it in the control panel under System, click view details under the score.

It's in the first line. The wei is the same for both.
