It's SOUP! Windows 7 is now the real deal...
I am now downloading Windows 7 Ultimate from the TechNet site, where I have a subscription. If all goes swimmingly, I will install Windows 7 on my T60 ThinkPad later today. Be advised, that I had to download the distro using a Vista machine using IE7 because W7's RC1 Internet Explorer 8 did not seem to be able to manage it.
Windows 7 has worked well for me starting with the beta and on thru the RC1.
To Lenovo's credit, they already have some drivers and utilities posted to support Windows 7.
I sense that lots of Lenovo items will not be necessary in Windows 7 like they were with XP and Vista, but that's just my guess.
Coupled with a solid state hard drive, speed is stellar. I am curious to see if Windows 7 RTM is as solid state drive "aware" as some Microsofties claim in their blogs, or if I will need to manually disable prefetch, superfetch and defrag.

Hint for downloaders - use the Akamai alternate download link instead of the regular TechNet or MSDN link (links are on the download page). The regular site is downloading at 170 kB/s and Akamai's site is downloading at 5 MB/s (may be limited by the speed of your internet connection). A download from Akamai's site took 10 minutes to complete whereas one from the regular Technet site that was started 4 hours ago still has an hour to go.

The earliest I can get it is the 13th - when it hits MSDNAA sites
I was also told I might have to wait until the ~24th.

Installed Windows 7 pro x64 on my Thinkpad T60 the day before yesterday...its absolutely amazing. Far better than vista and the new features rock. I upgraded from XP. Also feels very fast and responsive.

Thanks for posting the screen shot. It gives me a comparison to my own T60. My processor isn't as fast, but with a solid state hard drive my total score is 3.6 and the hard drive rating is 6.9, thanks to the fast drive.okio wrote:Installed Windows 7 pro x64 on my Thinkpad T60 the day before yesterday...its absolutely amazing. NP, yeah you should look forward to upgrade the cpu. How come your ram score is lower than mine? Or because off the video sharing? Thanks for posting the screen shot. Re: It's SOUP! Windows 7 is now the real deal...
I just finished installing Win 7 RTM/64bit on my X200s (with SSD).
I've been running Win 7 Beta and RTM on the X200s since early summer, with next to no problems. The released version of Win 7 is even better. The install went smooth, all Lenovo drivers (from the Win7 BETA site) just works.
I've installed the following software with no problems at all: Firefox 3.0.13, Total Commander, Avast Antivirus, Paint Shop Pro 6.02 (yes, I know its reeeaaallly old), Skype, Messenger, Foxit Reader, Filezilla Client, Windows Home Server components, Steam Client, Secunia PSI, Picasa 3, Brickstore.
If I encounter no problems my workstation is schedules to be reinstalled next weekend.
Summary:
I highly recommend Windows 7 to all owners of a newer TP. Vista sucked - in my opinion this is the best MS OS since Windows 2000.

Re: It's SOUP! Windows 7 is now the real deal...
I notice that you are running a solid state hard drive. Since I am new to this type of drive did you you need to manually disable anything like Prefetch and Superfetch, etc.?Jagoop wrote:I just finished installing Win 7 RTM/64bit on my X200s (with SSD)..
Any hints or tips for using the solid state hard drive and any special settings or adjustments would be appreciated.
Thanks!
