Looking for free firewall
Looking for free firewall
I just installed Windows 7 RC onto my A31 and I am looking for a good free firewall.
Any ideas? I cant believe how fast it is running!
Thanks

There's a pretty good one built into Windows 7. Open "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" to have a look.

Re: Looking for free firewall
Ok thanks i will have to take a look at it. I had just assumed that it would be like the one XP and not desirable to use. Thanks for your help.

Re: Looking for free firewall
PC Tools makes a very good free firewall..top rated.
Re: Looking for free firewall
The firewall in windows 7 not only allows control over inbound connections, but outbound ones too.
As for me, I just use the hardware firewall build into my dlink router.

Re: Looking for free firewall
a hardware firewall is only useful if you stay in one place... I have a dedicated VPN firewall for when I'm at home, but that's useless when I'm on the road (when you're essentially most at risk) so I also have a software-based firewall. The software firewalls I have used include Zonealarm, Comodo and Outpost. I believe that all offer free versions, so read the reviews and take your pick. I currently use Outpost Pro on a vista machine and I hope it's compatible with Win7 (should be).
I have heard the Win7 firewall is much improved, but ultimately I don't trust that MS has not built in some sort of backdoor so software from various vendors can phone home without you knowing. Adobe software is notorious for this and I hate effectively being spied on even tho my software is all legal.

Re: Looking for free firewall
Comodo I think makes the best free firewall you can get.
Re: Looking for free firewall
For 40 bucks more than free, you can get a full security suite from Checkpoint (ZoneAlarm). With security, you really don't get what you don't pay for. Oh, and that 40 bucks covers Three PC's for a year.tf34mech wrote:I just installed Windows 7 RC onto my A31 and I am looking for a good free firewall.

Isn't your data worth $0.10958904109589041095890410958904 per day?
Re: Looking for free firewall
This is an excellent firewall. I have used it in the past and can highly recommend.visionviper wrote:Comodo I think makes the best free firewall you can get.

Re: Looking for free firewall
I just use the Windows firewall, even the non-recommended XP one. With my PCs behind a router at all times, it gives me sufficient security and minimum headaches. One can argue that this is a false sense of security, but fact is that over the past 5 years, on a number of PCs, using nothing but the aforementioned configuration, I've had very very few cases of malware, most of which were trivial to fix...
