Installing Windows 7 RTM on the X301

#1 Post by craigg » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:04 pm

For those considering the installation of Windows 7 on the X301, I did a clean install of the 64 bit full release and I'm happy to report that to the best of my knowledge everything works. I used most of the Lenovo beta drivers. The only old driver that I installed was the Vista bluetooth driver. I have been up for about a week and find the performance to be much better than Vista.

Re: Installing Windows 7 RTM on the X301- Keyboard Problems Here

That's good to hear - my mileage is varying.

I've installed Win 7 RTM about 3 times - both 32- and 64-bit, and I'm having a consistent problem with keyboard data entry. Essentially, if I type REALLY SLOWLY all is fine. But whenever I go back to normal typing speed, I start getting erratic behavior.

Sometimes while I'm typing, the cursor will jump back to a spot earlier in the same line and insert new text from there, or sometimes it jumps to the next line, or even worse, I've been using it via remote desktop to my primary machine running Outlook, it will send a message in middle of a sentence. It's as though I'm hitting some kinds of keystroke combination, but I haven't been able to get enough consistency to figure it out. It could perhaps also be some kind of full buffer problem after -x- keystrokes.

So here's a question - can you confirm which of the beta Lenovo drivers you have installed? I tried a few, and just re-installed 64-bit without adding anything else yet -

I have to say that other than the keyboard, and some missing OSD indicators, I like the perfomance and usability. But if I can't get the keyboard to work, I'm back to XP... :|
(and to make sure I reinstalled the XP Preload, and kbd was fine - so it's not hardware)

Thanks for any ideas...

I have not had any issues with the keyboard. As far as which drivers to install you have to read the description of each driver on the beta page and only install the drivers that are specifically listed for the X301. I have been using Windows 7 for more than a month now and it has been fast and rock solid.
