Vista used to save daily Previous Versions of Files, a lifesaver when you accidentally delete a file or make a change that you want to reverse a few days later. But this feature can use up to 15% of the disk space by default, so complaints started about how Vista would "eat up" additional space on the hard disk over time. In Windows 7, this feature is severely crippled. It now only creates Previous Versions once every 7 days. To say that this is useless is an understatement. (This one is easily fixed by creating a scheduled task to force creation of a daily restore point).

Yes. However, they assigned too much disk space and provide very arcane ways to fix it. I cut shadow storage in half, but most users would never figure out such a move.

I cannot buy the point that Microsoft can use up all the resources. I need ram for Virtual Machines way more than superfetch. I don't actually think it does anything on my machine. And I want disk for my stuff. I back it up, so I don't need multiple copies.

The mistake Microsoft made and continues to make is that they think they know more about what I want to do than I do. And vastly more than 99% of the time, they are dead wrong - completely and totally clueless about what an experienced user might need.

I don't say they shouldn't provide these things - just make them easily and usefully manageable. Then we users (all of us) get what we want. ... JDH

JDH:

Just to be clear, my comments were not directed towards an experienced user like you, but rather at those who draw the wrong conclusions from their observations. For example, those who wrote pages of misleading information about how having RAM filled somehow meant that Vista was "hogging it all", leaving nothing for programs, when they were conveniently forgetting that the Vista memory manager instantly releases RAM to programs when they need it. Therefore there is no harm in keeping it filled with blocks from the disk until such time that the RAM is needed.

The easily-manageable comment is a valid criticism and was addressed in Windows 7. Shadow storage on each disk is easily adjustable with a slider control.

Hi Mark,
I know you were not directing your comments to users like me, and I was just venting a bit on how Microsoft is starting to build operating systems for one kind of user only, leaving people like me out in the cold.

Vista does manage memory better and I hope Windows 7 will at least manage memory well. I am looking forward to the management of disk by a slider (like XP) instead of:
vssadmin resize shadowstorage /for=c: /on=c: /maxsize=14Gb

Thanks, ... JDH

I couldn´t agree more! However, it is also true that Vista has slightly higher own memory usage than most other operating systems, i.e. the memory usage (like for kernel tasks etc.) cannot drop say below 670 MB (if you can do miracles), most of time it is at least in the range of 750 MB at minimum. Compared to most other operating systems, the difference is equal to at least one virtual machine :) With Windows 7, the minimal RAM usage can go below 600 MB from what I have seen, which then gives more RAM space for prefetch/superfetch and programs in total.

I installed 64 bit Windows 7 on my X200s yesterday. Have not had a problem with drivers or wireless connection etc. The only issue is the display does not seem to go as dim as it did with the factory install of Vista I wiped. Also there are no display bars to tell you of the brightness level. I use this computer with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Windows sees the model keyboard I am using as well.

Really no complaints. I did a full install of 64/Professional. I use winamp, Open Office, Pidgin and Firefox constantly and no problems. Also use an ultrabase with DVD-RW drive; works fine too. Also installed the Update 4 from Lenovo.

I recommend it.

So far the only box here running Win7 (Pro 64) is a dual CPU, dual core Opteron with 6GB memory and 1TB disk. Runs fine. /ducks

I've not received my upgrade disk for the X61T yet...

I have the Release Candidate still running on my Toshiba(expires next summer, of course) runs just as fast as my copy of Vista, and boots way faster, perfect for on the go. A friend of mine has 7 running on his Sony Vaio Desktop, was considering Vista but turned it down thinking his PC couldn't handle it. After I recommended 7 he ended up getting it and it works perfectly. Aero works and programs open in a flash. I believe it's a Sony Vaio Desktop, Intel Pentium 4 at 2.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 2 DVD-RWs, NVIDIA card(unknown model) with 64 MB graphics memory.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...

Had 7 beta/rc T42 - 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, ATI 9600 64MB and it ran sweet!

Did the same for the T60 in my signature now and that run even better.

NOw i have a T61 - T8100(2.1GHz), 2GB RAM, 120GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1280x768 LCD, Intel X3100 and it's running sweet on here too. UPgraded to 4GB for the hell of it but it was good on 2GB anyways!

I now have Windows 7 running fairly smoothly on my T61p on a second drive (Seagate 500Gb 7200-rpm). I installed all the latest drivers for Windows 7 and all that is smooth.

I did one image and beat it up pretty badly and within a day or so, did a new image. I had some minor problems including one problem (DPI on Experts-Exchange) that I could not figure out. I did a third and final image that I am running on now, sorted out the DPI problem (learned it was a DPI problem on the third image), got a whole new IPSec VPN tool running, have installed a number of my key infrastructure tools, and am getting near ready to install Office 2007 and move it into production.

I am running a reliablilty index in Windows 7 of 10 (the same as I am currently running in Vista). ... JDH

Have Win7 Enterprise x64 on x200s w/SSD and Enterprise x86 on x41t w/1.5GB RAM.

The hand writing recognition is amazing on the x41t.

Windows 7 pro 64bit on X61t with 6GB RAM. It's working good so far. Though I haven't really use tablet features since I've installed it. I still have to reinstall OneNote once I get access to a cd drive.
