3G ram vs 4G ram in 32-bit Win7

#1 Post by nomoreno » Tue Oct 20, 2009 1:18 pm

My understanding is that 32-bit OS can only handle 3.25G memory, so what's the point of having 4G ram on a 32-bit machine? Are we wasting the 0.75G memory? In terms of performance, is there any significant difference between 3G ram and 4G ram in a 32-bit Windows 7? All comments are welcome!

This question has been answered many many times on this forum.

Provided there are no hardware limitations within the range of 4 GB, 32-bit windows OS can manage ~3 GB of system memory, the exact amount closely depends on the system. In this sense, the 0.75 GB are truly wasted. With 32-bit windows OS (like Windows 7 32bit), there is no significant performance difference between 3 GB and 4 GB. The only difference that could occur here would be due to the fact that 4 GB typically consists of two modules with the same memory amount, which puts the memory into symmetric dual channel operating mode, whereas 3 GB necessarily consists of two modules of different capacity, which on modern systems puts the memory into asymmetric dual channel operating mode. According to tests performed by some forum members, the performance difference between symmetric dual channel mode and asymmetric dual channel mode is within the range of 6-8% in favor of the first one in memory-intensive tasks (like synthetic memory benchmarks). Even so, the performance gain is only specific, i.e. concerns only the memory performance, not the overall system performance. Hence the overall performance gain in real life applications is negligible.

As far as Windows Server OS and Linux are concerned, things look slightly differently because even in their 32bit editions these operating systems can manage 4 and more GB of system memory (up to existing hardware limitations) and thus are capable of taking advantage of the additionally available system memory (e.g. for caching purposes).

How do you view iphone 3g hardrive on comp? When i click "My computer" only apple iphone pictures show up and not the hardrive itself. I have the latest itunes and updates for my phone, but it's not recognizing the hardrive. What can i do to make my computer recognize the iphone 3g hardrive?
