how can i upgrade from Vista to 7? I check on my computer preferences and I did not see the option. there also does not seem to be an obvious way to do it from MS website.

I believe you need Windows 7 installation media (DVD) in order to perform such upgrade. When the Windows 7 setup program is loaded, one is presented with two options: custom or upgrade install.

Sure, purchase a Windows 7 upgrade disc, either retail or OEM. The only exception would be if you participated in Lenovo's Window upgrade program, but the machines in your sig are too old to qualify, except for the x300 and that would depend on when you bought it. Check the terms at this link
