Trackpoint Scroll Freeze, Lockup, Win 7 x64 + Firefox

#1 Post by jmcafee » Mon Oct 26, 2009 3:03 am

Win 7 x64 RTM installed on T400 and T42. Firefox 3.0.x, 3.5.x. All current Win 7 drivers. FF extensions and add-ons disabled.

In both machines with both versions of Firefox, scrolling a web page with the Trackpoint causes the following:
  • Text lines are duplicated as they scroll into the window.
    The browser window will freeze.
    The system freezes seconds later.
Sometimes the Task Manager can be invoked, sometimes not.
Reboot required to clear the problem.
I cannot duplicate the problem in IE8.

Very few have reported the problem. Bugzilla reports are hard to find, but I've seen several references without any resolution. Speculation it is a Trackpoint driver problem, but I would expect the issue to be widely reported.

Do any of you know of a solution?

Reporting the exact same problem:

Scrolling with the middle trackpoint buttons causes Firefox (actually the minefield 3.7 alpha) to freeze. At the same time, the trackpoint does not respond to any movement, although my USB mouse continues to function.

W7 shows the Minefield is not responding message box, and I have to cancel it manually. After Minefield closes, the trackpoint works again.

Although it is not as serious as what you have described, I'm pretty sure they are caused by the same problem.

After a week of vigorous testing, I'm willing to declare a cure.

I uninstalled the original ATI graphics drivers from the Lenovo Win7 Beta d/l, then manually installed the newest official set from Lenovo. Curiously, the System Update never saw this update to the beta drivers.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is the fix.

Hmm.... I have the drivers from the Beta page (But it says RTM level, so I assume they're the latest).

The issue still occurs for me, although intermittently as I usually have an external mouse plugged in.
