basic Win7 upgrade question

#1 Post by npish » Tue Nov 24, 2009 10:08 pm

I'm about to take the plunge and install Win7 on my T60p; I was wondering though, for those who have installed the upgrade: I would really like to do a *completely* clean install and DBAN my drive beforehand--not just delete the partition and reformat--, which I have done successfully with my Vista upgrade disc. My concern is whether or not the Win7 installer will need to "see" Vista on my machine before performing the upgrade, given that wiping the drive will of course leave no trace.

thanks in advance for any insight.

What I read is that the Windows 7 upgrade versions will need to see an activated copy of windows before they will install. That seems to me to pretty much rule out anything other than letting the Windows installer delete the partition.

interesting... makes sense I guess; why would anyone buy the full version otherwise, right? although, unless I'm not remembering correctly, I believe I've done it (multiple times) with the Vista upgrade disc that I received from Lenovo.

in any case, thanks for the response.

To summarize from Paul's site, you can either double install or install, do a registry tweak, and then activate.
