Windows 7 won't hibernate

#1 Post by netizen » Sun Nov 29, 2009 5:49 am

First post, first problem :)
I wouldn't hibernate my ThinkPad T60 2007-CTO , when I click Hibernate or use Fn+F12 Windows just logged me off. With Windows Vista I don't have such a problem. Maybe this would be helpful from command prompt when I'd use shutdown /h command:

Code: Select all

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Users\Administrator>shutdown /h
The system cannot find the file specified.(2)

I did this already, with no success.

Did you reboot after (re-)enabling the hibernation? Windows 7 may require a restart to create the hibernation file..., who knows... If the hibernation file got deleted or moved or corrupted somehow, you should try playing a bit more with the powercfg -hibernation, like disable-enable-reboot or enable-reboot-disable-enable-reboot (hibernation)...

If you have another Windows 7 system or Vista system with working hibernation, you could copy the hibernation file from there to the system with the hibernation problem and let us know if it works

Do you have the page file (not the hibernation one!) disabled, say, instead of being managed by windows? Also, how much free space have you left on your main partition? Are you running Windows 7 RTM/u] or one of the beta versions?

Поздрави,

Марин

EDIT: I just ran some simple tests and it appears that the system creates the hibernation file right after enabling hibernation in cmd.

yes, I did it in this way

I'm not sure this will work between different machines.

I have both files, pagefile and hibernation file. Windows7 is RTM, not a beta version.

Did you download and install the latest power management drivers?

Need the Driver version. Version 1.55 is the latest

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ku07ww.exe

I had the same issue on an old T40 that wouldn't hibernate under XP. I didn't update the Driver (I did as you did, and updated the Management software). Once I figured out I needed the driver, it worked just fine ;)

By any chance are you using a cluster size other than the default 4kB? I had all kinds of hibernation problems when using a 16kB cluster size. Changing back to 4kB fixed it. Others have reported this as an issue. This is apparently a bug with Win 7.

Ok, some final things to try.

Turn off Hibernate.
Delete the hibernate file (if still present).
Set your power configs back to default.
shutdown
Disconnect all your USB devices.
Check your BIOS settings (take them back to default).
Boot
Enable hibernate
Verify it works, if not...

Call Lenovo Tech support

The last post of Guz... reminds me, the issue might be related to some BIOS bug. What BIOS version do you have?

I have discovered what I think is a solution to my problem, maybe it's related to yours. I cannot hibernate or sleep on a random basis since installing Win 7, more often than not I would have a problem. I have tried uninstalling Access Connections and other fixes I found around with Google, even shutting off wireless with the physical switch on the front of my X60s before trying to hibernate. Every thing I tried seemed to work, but then didn't. I finally discovered what was keeping me from hibernating. I have a mapped drive which sits on my router in a seagate freeagent dockstar network adapter. If the drive is available, I have no problem hibernating. If the network connection to the mapped drive is unavailable (which happens occasionally for unrelated reasons) then I cannot hibernate. Once I get mapped properly again, I am good to go. I suggest you check to see if there are any network resource that Windows is trying to connect or disconnect from/to. If it cannot, it may result in a hang while trying to sleep or hibernate. This has resolved my frustration in trying to troubleshoot this problem.

As it turns out, I am still searching for a solution. The problem seems to go away for a while, then it returns. I suspect it is related to power settings, but I am still trying to solve!

There is an excellent blog on the Windows 7 power-saving modes available on TechNet http://blogs.technet.com/b/hub/archive/ ... rnate.aspx . In the last section of the blog, it discusses possible causes of “PC insomnia” and two specific settings which can be used to resolve persistent failure of the PC to enter sleep or hibernation modes.

The two settings are the “Allow this device to wake the computer” setting for hardware devices and the “Allow wake timers” setting which can be used to allow software to wake or keep awake the system. The first suggestion is always to ensure that your software and drivers are completely up to date. Should the problem persist after the use of these settings and the latest updates installed, please provide the hardware, driver revision, applications and application versions for more detailed review.

Thanks WinOutreach, I have tried all of these settings; and others as well, with no luck. I have an X60s 1703-BW3 with an SSD Toshiba drive and 2GB ram. I have all updates installed, both Windows 7 and Lenovo. I have MSO 2003 installed, as well as ESET Smart Security 4. I have two other TP's with similar sofwtare (although both with MSO 2010 instead) which do not have this problem, a T43 and T400s. They both sleep and hibernate fine. Any other advice would be welcomed.
