every "restart" freezes

#1 Post by ranchmom5 » Mon Dec 14, 2009 1:51 pm

(Moderators, if this should be in a different forum, please move it)

I am not asking about W7 on a TP, but on my Dell desktop. I just trust all of the great people here so it is where I come for computer questions.

Everything works great on a regular boot, love the OS, but when try to reboot or restart, it freezes on the Windows page.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like a driver or app is hanging on your restarts. Go to Control Panel->Performance Information and Tools->Advanced Tools->View Performance Details in Event Log. Read the entries for “Boot Performance Monitoring”. One or more of the entries will indicate an app or driver took longer than usual to start. Make a note of what seems to be causing the problem and report back.

I would suggest you eliminate the app/driver causing the problem from starting up but some things are required for the machine to boot. Knowing what is causing the problem will let us give better suggestions.

I tried to follow your advice, but am not sure I correctly located "Boot Performance Monitoring". However, if I did the right thing, it shows 48 events from 12/7 (the day I did fresh install of W7) to 12/14. 11 red exclamation mark Errors, one Critical and the rest yellow warnings. How do I tell what the app or driver is?

Clicking on an entry will bring up an information box with a specific description of the warning or error. It will describe the particular app or driver and the particular warning or error related to that event.
