Windows 7 hangs on shutdown

#1 Post by tpribors » Sat Dec 26, 2009 2:16 pm

System is a T60p. This is a clean install and having run the System Update. Also added WinDVD and the Sonic software (full versions that load are under the T61 software but are compatible.)

On SHUTDOWN the system will go through all the motions you usually see. Then the screen goes black, and stops. I can tell that the system has not shut down since the Bluetooth and power lights are still on.

Any ideas?

Also, standby, sleep and restart work - only shutdown is affected.

Any ideas???

Have you installed the Lenovo System Interface Driver and the ACPI Power Management Driver? If you download manually, you have to first run the file to extract the drivers to your hard drive, then run setup.exe in the appropriate subfolder of C:\Drivers. Alternatively you can use System Update to install these drivers.

Yes, I've done all those things. The System Update 4.0 gets them.

I think I might have made the mistake of allowing the Windows download for the Bluetooth to sneak in. This was after I loaded the Thinkpad Bluetooth package. I'm going to do a reinstall and check after each step to see if I can catch the offending driver.

Also, I did a search and thought I found a hotfix related to this and was going to look more, but I can no longer find it. There are several related to shutdown and sleep hangs but they are all for pre-releases. This one was for the released version. It did speak of some base power management modules. It feels like some driver is refusing to let go.

Event Viewer->Applications and Services logs->Microsoft->Windows->Diagnostics-Performance->Operational. Read the entries until you come to the one that describes the performance degradation

Here's the hotfix (I found it by searching the knowledge base for acpi.sys as I remembered this was one of the files).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977307

I'll try it after I get home today. Nothing to lose since I was going to reinstall and add pieces until I found it anyway. I'm sure it is some driver or power setting.

The Hotfix did not fix the shutdown problem.

Do you have the latest BIOS and Embedded Controller firmware installed? You can check from the links I posted previously.

Yep. It worked on one of the trial installs I did. I also reset the power manager to a default profile.

I also used the BIOS to disable all the network and the infrared device in case one of them wasn't letting go, no luck...

I'll reinstall tomorrow and see if I can find a recipe.

I'm pretty sure I found it. It was a Delkin UDMA Cardbus adapter. The driver isn't quite compatible - it seems that with some flash cards in the adapter the system hangs on shutdown. I tried a 512MB (which I usually have installed for Quicken backups) and a 1GB card and both hung. With a 16GB card installed it does not hang. I'll just revert to the regular PCMCIA card and whine to Delkin.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
