Win7 ThinkVantage System Update NOT Working

#1 Post by mdclow » Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:54 pm

I have a T60 (8744-5BU) that I have done a clean install of Win7 Ultimate from WinXP Pro. I could not use ThinkVantage SysUpdate when I had WinXP because the machine type in the registry (My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\ACPI\DSDT\LENOVO\) was not correct. My registry had “TP-7I___” as the machine type. If I went into the registry and changed “TP-7I___” to “87445BU” and then ran ThinkVantage Update it would bring down updates and install them. After a reboot the registry entry would revert back to “TP-7I___”. Each time I wanted to run ThinkVantage SysUpdate I would have to do this registry edit.

I have the same problem now that I have Win7 Ult. The registry key for My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\ACPI\DSDT\LENOVO\ is still “TP-7I___” and ThinkVantage Systme Update will not download. If I change the key to “87445BU” as I did with WinXP it will NOT allow ThinkVantage Sys Update to download.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I looked in the BIOS but did not see an area where machine type is listed. Perhaps you can direct me to the area where machine type is listed. Below are pictures of the two main screen areas of my BIOS:

It would be on the first screenshot where it says system unit serial number. Since that is blank, it needs to be programmed. Do a forum search on HMD.

Thanks for the diagnosis of the problem. After doing a forum search on HMD I have determined that the process is past my comfort level as I get nervous flashing hardware and with my initial serach I did not see anything that detailed the process or where to get the HMD software. There were a few links but they were dead and then there was some mention that the process was usually to be done by what I would call Pros.

So I will take my ThinkPad to my local (Metro Detroit) Lenovo Waranty/Repair center.
T-Tech Solutions in Troy, Michigan. They have done great work on a couple of warranty situations and also were very good with a couple of Toshiba machines I had prior to my ThinkPad.

OK, good luck. Usually what happens in these cases is that the system board got replaced at some point in the laptops past and the repair outfit did not reprogram the machine type/model/serial number back in.
