Wireless Adapter for Windows 7

#1 Post by ranjit » Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:34 am

Hi All,

I am planning to install Windows 7 on my T42 (2373-NUA) which is currently running Windows XP Professional SP3. My questions are:

1) Can I still continue using the Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI adapter (v1.2.4.41) or is it best to upgrade to a newer wireless card?
2) Is there a updated driver for this adapter on Lenovo website or Windows Update?
3) If it is necessary to change the adapter, which one is recommended?

Thank you.

Cheers,
Ranjit

I would recommend the Intel 2200bg or the 2915abg, because they support WPA encryption and have native W7 drivers.
The FRU's are listed at this link.

On a T42 and even newer systems I wouldn't do any upgrades except maybe a HDD or SSD. You already paid a fixed amount and its a sunk cost that you hope to recover through money made or utility from what you spent. Why lengthen the payback period for marginal improvement in speed and or range? Moreover, the security aspect is overblown as your neighbor is not going to be sniffing any data from you let alone even undestand the concept assuming you do. You are better off allocating the money to your next system or to more and or faster storage.

That statement is not only condescending to the OP, it is minimally irresponsible. There can never be enough emphasis placed on the importance of wireless security. Plus we're talking about a card that costs a few dollars. Hardly a major upgrade.

There is simply no way anyone can readily determine who may be listening on what is essentially a broadcast medium, let alone why they might feel the need to listen, so that is very, very poor advice indeed.

Hi,

I think the 91P7301 does and Maybe the 2915. The 7301 is what I installed on the T41 I just sold. After the update from the System updates from Lenovo I think WPA and maybe WPA2 was listed.

By the way the 91P7301 When installed in my T43 gave me the 1802 error, But when installed in my T41 it reconized it just fine (NO Error).

I have the Intel 2200BG adapter in my T42 (what it came with). Works fine with Windows 7. I use WPA-Personal with TKIP, but it does support the following security types in Windows 7: No authentication (Open), Shared, WPA2-Personal, WPA-Personal, WPA2-Enterprise, WPA-Enterprise, and 802.1X. It also supports AES and TKIP encryption.

I got the driver from Windows Update.

Hi

maybe a bit late but I have loaded win7 on my t30 with the original equipment in. win 7 accepted the xp drivers for the intel wireless card with no problems. Mind you I had downloaded the latest from lenovo site a couple of months ago.

Hope this helps.

cheers
