Windows 7 OEM on T60p
Windows 7 OEM on T60p
Hello all.
I just purchased an IBM refurbished T60p, with 15" flexview display, running Windows XP. I don't have the laptop yet. It gets here Friday.
Anticipating setting it up this weekend, I went out and bought a copy of Windows 7 OEM system builders. I am under the impression that I can use this license as long as I don't transfer it to any other machine. Is my assumption correct? I don't want to have any licensing issues. Do I need to return it and buy Windows 7 upgrade? Is this license ok for use on this laptop?
I've reviewed a few web pages regarding the usage limitations of an OEM license and I'm just not sure. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Windows 7 OEM on T60p
My understanding of system builders licenses, though I'm certainly no guru on the subject, was that they were intended for new machines, but could be done on a blank drive of a used machine. You can't use it to upgrade a machine, which is fine for your T60 because there's no upgrade path from XP to Win 7 anyway. Once it's installed and activated, it's tied to that machine forever.

So it sounds like it will work, but at best I'm gray using it. Being non-transferable to another machine is not a problem, but I like to be on the up and up with MS. I'm thinking I should exchange it for a upgrade copy. Its only 30 dollars more if I'm not mistaken.

Hi crashnburn.
Its a factory refurbished T60P 2007-WUK. It comes with XP, assuming professional but don't know for sure since I don't have it yet.
The disk is Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit (Full) - System Builder (OEM) version - DVD

According to the current EULA of the OEM System Builder licence, you cannot legally install it as you have described.
Microsoft have changed the requirements of the OEM licence and basically stopped hobbyists/home builders from using the OEM licence.
See here for the comparisons and requiements of the OEM licence,

I think the change was made with Vista but it's certainly the case for Windows 7.
Of course, you can still install an OEM version without the OPK and it will activate and show as a genuine version of Windows but by the letter of the EULA it's not legal.

I'm not advocating/advising you to use it but Steve Ballmer isn't going to show up at your home. I would still get the upgrade copy.o2nexus wrote:So it sounds like it will work, but at best I'm gray using it.
