Upgrade from XP

#1 Post by cookie » Tue Sep 07, 2010 4:15 pm

Hello, is there a way to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 Home Premium on a ThinkPad? I know there are disks for upgrades, but the are for Windows Vista to Windows 7, not XP.

you can use windows 7 upgrade to upgrade from xp to 7. i used windows 7 professional upgrade on 2 x32's. it's designed for vista but you can use it on xp. you have to do a custom install and the upgrade is a little bit more expensive than a full install. the nice thing about it is all my pics and movies came over to 7 from xp. it puts xp in a folder called windows.old. you can't use the anytime upgrade that's just for going up the scale like from 7home to 7professional and so on. you can go on microsoft's site and it explains how to use the upgrade to go from xp to 7. you'll have to reinstall your programs if you upgrade.

This program helps make your "upgrade" a piece of cake. You can buy a family pack for $149.99 that gives you a three computer license. Yes...it does install Windows 7 but it erases your HD in the process. Then the Easy Transfer program restores your files (not the programs). This worked well for me and does not involve that much work.

Thanks! I just upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7!!! Everything worked out great! BUT.... its says The current video card may support Aero with a driver that is compliant with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card for a WDDM-compatible driver. :?: This is the drivers I have: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500

How can I get Aero to work??

Aero Requires a DirectX 9 compatible graphics processor with a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver, Pixel shader 2.0 in hardware, and a minimum of 128 MB of Video RAM.

The Radeon 7500 doesn't meet those requirements. The minimum requirements for graphics cards goes from the Radeon 9500 and up. You can still run Win7 just fine, but without Aero features.

I changed my OS on my T60P from Vista to Win7. First I somehow installed the 32-bit version and only noticed when I checked on how much RAM was being recognized. I then re-ran the installer with the proper disk and got the 64-bit version, with the full 4GB of RAM being recognized/used.

My distrust of upgrading an OS vs. doing a fresh install led me to buy the full version of Windows 7 and do the backup/wipe/install routine. I'm very happy with the performance, and good riddance to Vista!

The T60 chipset is limited to 3GB of memory regardless of how much memory you put in there or what the OS reports. I must be the only person who likes Vista.
