Customized Bootscreen (No, NOT the Bootsplash/Welcome/Login)

#1 Post by Radioguy » Thu Sep 09, 2010 10:30 am

I used to tweak out my older ThinkPads, but I never got around to doing a custom BIOS bootsplash on my T61 (should, though). Although, I did add a custom login/welcome (just the same Think desktop image). Well, it would now seem the trifecta of boot customization is close at hand:

These guys are at, or near, the alpha stage of an app that will let you replace the Win7 boot animation itself.

I think I'll go the whole hog if this pans out. Maybe even do the start menu orb switch.

Just a comment - not a criticism.

Why you you want to slow down the boot process?
I want my OS up and running ASAP.

Yeah, it's cool and all, but I think it would get a bit tiresome pretty quickly.

Once that project get up and running well, you'll see crazy fools creating full HD video boot up screen.

If you read the thread, you'll see their aspirations are not fully realized (yet). The best that you can do right now is change the animation (It's capped at a specific number of frames), not do full video.

Also, I think they said it can be bypassed entirely, so rather than add it, this hack might actually reduce boot time if you just drop the animation. Of course, that animation is there so we don't have to see a boring list of drivers being loaded (like in safe mode), so I don't know how much faster (if at all) it would be to remove it. I just like the idea of switching the animation for one with your "if found" data (like in bootspalsh), or maybe a "Think" or IBM logo. Hell, why not a pic of your kid?
