from what i understand, the reason ibm and lenovo do this is to be in full compliance with fcc rules regarding interference. the antennas and allowed cards are matched, hence the compliance sticker on the bottom of the laptop. hp does the same thing.

I'm finally cable free, the Lenovo OEM Intel 5300 is hummin' along beautifully.
