Alternative to Windows 7 Search

#1 Post by mdclow » Mon Oct 18, 2010 7:48 pm

I did a clean install of Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit on my T60 back in February and I am very happy with it with one exception. I have tried changes Win 7 folder options to be able to search contents of files or use a wildcard and to no avail. Is anyone using third party search software instead of Win 7 OS search?

There was a very similar discussion here:

My own preference:

I've been using X1 for more than 5 years, and it's got a really good interface to fine-tune your searches, right down to which email folder or which file folder you wish to find your email/files...

I can attest that it really does save you lots of time each day, and I use it everyday for office work... so for US$50, think of it as an investment in your time saved each day...

X1 indexes your files on the fly (Real Time Indexing), X1 also does Real Time indexing for Outlook emails, and if you're using Thunderbird it also indexes it as well (X1 is much better than Thunderbird 3's built-in indexing, i've tried both).

Disclaimer: I do not work for X1; I'm just a X1 user.

There's always Google Desktop. I don't use it myself and disable Windows Search.

Since the forum fellows have already given some good suggestions for third-party software, I´d like to point your attention to perhaps giving another chance to windows search :D What I have in mind, is the following: try to search from the folder itself instead from within a library, e.g. to perform search in Documents navigate (the full path!) to C:\Users\$UserName$\Documents instead of pressing windows key and opening Documents from the start menu. Does it work out for you? I am asking this because it seems that windows search coupled with the libraries feature tends to behave strangely under certain circumstances...

All very interesting solutions but I am always a bit wary on third party softwares. Mind you there are a lot out there that do a fantastic job. But I suppose that is how Microsoft make their money with their products to fit the set computer
