Any reason to upgrade T61 with Vista 32 to Windows 7 x64?

#1 Post by JoeSchmoe007 » Wed Dec 22, 2010 8:27 pm

I currently use Vista 32 on my T61. This is not my primary PC - Dell Dimension 8400 desktop with XP is.

What I do on my laptop: browsing, MS Office, Visual Studio 2010, SQL Server Dev. Edition. No gaming.

Currently everything is running without any problems under Vista 32 bit (which is what laptop came with).

I installed Windows 7 X64 on the laptop in trial mode just to check it out and all hardware is detected. It does seem a bit snappier than Vista 32 (maybe wishful thinking).

Any reason to upgrade T61 with Vista 32 to Windows 7 x64? Or not to upgrade? Can anyone who uses Visual Studio share their experience?

here's my 2 cents. i don't use visual studio but i downloaded the trial version and it's pretty neat. i'm running windows 7 32 on 4 old x series thinkpads. i had to try visual studio on an hp coz the thinkpads weren't up to it. anyway, i had vista on one and it used up a lot of space on the hard drive and it booted up slow and it had lags in it everywhere. windows 7 didn't have any of that but had the same features as vista. it is snappier than vista. plus windows 7 has an option that gives you xp pro in a virtual machine that runs within windows 7. it allows you to run xp programs from windows 7 which normally won't run. only windows 7 pro and ultimate give you that option though. once i got the drivers figured out and got everything configured right, all my machines run great. they boot up faster than xp and shut down faster. programs load faster. everything just seems to run smoother.

for you, it's gonna be a personal preference. if you're happy with vista, and everything works alright then i doubt if you're gonna gain much. with me, i gained a lot, but i really noticed the difference on my slower machines.
