Widows 7 Update over and over and over again!

#1 Post by Greg Gebhardt » Sun May 01, 2011 5:43 am

The below updates are trying to install on my new T420s. The problem is that they install and when i reboot it takes 5 minutes to configure the new updates before completing the boot up. I o not mind this but after it does boot up Windows downloads the same updates and requests for me to install them again! It has done this over and over.

No doubt something is wrong. If any one has any suggestions, let me know. In the mean time I am going to cease this Window update thing.

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2515325)

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2522422)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB982018)

I saw the same thing. The configure progress was stuck at 0% for couple of minutes, then it just disappeared and I could log in.

Looking at the Windows Update logs I see the exact same updates failing to install twice on 28th April and then succeeding later that day. I'm not sure what exactly I did, I might have went to Windows Update and installed the updates from there instead of doing in during the system shutdown phase.

WOW, thanks for the reply. We are having the same thing going on. I will try to do the update while up and running and while not shutting down to see if I have success. Mine was stuck at 0% for longer than 2 minutes.

Thanks for the reply!

Well, fired up the desktop which is running Window 7 and the same updates came available to download and install. These 4 failed to install just like my laptop!

Looks like a Windows problem :P

I had the same problem for several days last week. I stopped shutting down and just went into hibernate instead. Problem solved when I went into windows update and downloaded ie9 that I had previously rejected. It seems that when it had something else to install in addition to the offending files. It worked!

I got the same situation. Try this method: select individual update and let it finish the process; repeat.

Failing that, make sure nothing is corrupt using SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt.

Thanks, will try that tonight, too. If there is a problem it must be on both my new T402S and my iMac running Win7 out of bootcamp!

Both a tripping on this update exactly the same.

At least some (if not all) of those updates are in SP1. Why don't you try installing SP1?

Re-installing SP1 is a good option. Back in my Vista days I had problems installing updates and I found it was related to a faulty install of SP1. The botch SP1 update went unnoticed until I started having problems with subsequent updates.

If SP1 doesn't resolve the problem then try going to Microsoft's Download Center and download the individual updates to your hard drive. Just do a search on the KB number to find the recommended download and save them to a folder. You can then run the individual updates locally from your hard drive.

OK mission accomplished.

Service pack 1 was installed over a week ago so that was not a factor.

I installed the updates one at a time and each was successful. The last was IE9 and after downloading it and getting ready to install it needed to close down a whole list of programs. I think this was what was hanging up the whole procedure.

I will do the same to the laptop and report back this weekend.
