Yes, data, the directories and folders, etc. I have 500GB Western Digital external drive so I am hoping that will be helpful, but what are the steps for migrating from one machine to another?

Why don't you just copy all the files you need off your T43 onto an external hard drive and then copy them onto the T520? That's the easiest way.

There is a program From Microsoft, called Windows Easy Transfer. Supposidly you can transfer from one machine to another machine via, a transfer cable, network(either wire or wirelss) or by external hard disk or USB memory key/flash drive. Has anyone tried this method yet? Are there anythings that I need to watch out for with this procedure?

"I have the same suggest."

If you mean, "I have the same question" :?:
Yes, the Windows Easy Transfer Cable works and is very easy to use. Just make sure you have all the programs you want to use installed on your new computer or new hard drive -- then with Windows easy transfer, all your personal settings/data/info will be transferred over to your new Windows install.

The WET cable is a waste of money. Simply share a folder on your new machine. On the old machine, map a drive to the shared folder. Run WET, choose to save it to an external drive, then point it at the mapped drive. Choose a file name, and go. Once it's done, just double-click the file on the new machine to start the import.

I always thought that windows and easy were mutually exclusive terms.

I'll bet it doesn't transfer applications either.

And probably the easiest way to get from WinXP to Win7. Win 7's user space is quite a bit different from that of WinXP. Easy Transfer collects the information from XP's user space, then directs it to the correct place in Win7 user space. All quite painless.

The link above is is written for the upgrade process on a single computer, but there's useful information re: your situation.

I just finished upgrading my T41 (23747JU) from Win XP Pro to Win7. Easy Transfer vastly simplified the process. See my other post elsethread.

How would one use windows (un)easy transfer to migrate data, if the you're using the same machine? Would I transfer off to a 2nd HDD in the ultrabay, get the machine ready with its new "personality" (OS on a new HDD), and then put the 2nd HDD back in the bay and transfer back to the "new" machine?

Recently updated a T42 running windows XP to windows 7.
I had all my data and programs ( I use portable versions of most apps) on a different partition which included IBM utilities installation files.

When I updated ( There is an option to select which partition you want to install) It just overwrote the partition with windows XP and I did not have any issues.
All my data and portable apps in the other partitions were unaffected.

Running each of the IBM utilities file got the sound drivers, OSD and other functionalities back to Windows 7.

Trying a similar procedure on a R52 also went well, except that IBM utilities e.g OSD, wi-fi do not work. The lan drivers do work though.

My recommendation would be to create a second partition on your disc, move all the data there and perform the upgrade on the primary disc where windows in installed.I used a really old version of partition magic to do the partitioning.

Windows 7 feels much faster on both the laptops.
