Lenovo ThinkPad X60s

#1 Post by GabrielJavier » Wed May 11, 2011 12:52 am

Hi, I am Ariel and I am new to this site. I got an X60s Laptop from my old brother. Its specs are as follows: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (1.66Ghz); 2.5G RAM,; 40G Hard Disk.
Its current OS is Windows XP. Am planning to upgrade its OS to windows 7.
With regards to this matter, will my PC work well with windows 7, what are the advantage and disadvantage it will bring to me? Thanks.

Windows 7 should work fine. My guess would be it will already have most of the drivers for your X60s already. If not you can get the latest ones here. The X60s is chipset limited to 3GB of memory and XP will probably be a little faster as it has less overhead, but Windows 7 should run well and give you a more modern OS.

The bottleneck is going to be that 40gb hard drive if it's mechanical drive. Replacing that hard drive with a 64GB SSD (~$80-$100) with aggressive garbage collection will make win7 faster.

I'm running win 7 on my X60s and it works just fine. It feels to be faster than XP.
Your specs are good except that 40GB drive, it must be very slow. If your budget is low and SSD is too expensive, try to buy some single platter 320GB, for example WD makes one. It will be a huge difference.

I've had it on a X60s. Works just fine. Starts up and shuts down faster than on XP as well.
I'M DONE WITH THINKPADS, JUST DONE!!!
