Win7 + ACPI + Crucial m4 SSD = Bluescreen [FIXED]

#1 Post by bjordan » Tue Jun 28, 2011 1:53 pm

I ran into an issue last night when setting up Windows 7 on my T420. Everything was going great until I installed the power management (ACPI) drivers. Then all the sudden I started getting bluescreens about every 5 minutes.

Unfortunately I'd been installing a lot of drivers so I didn't realize it was the power management drivers right away. After troubleshooting for a while I found out it was an issue with ACPI and the firmware on the Crucial M4 SSD.

Fortunately on 6/13/2011 Crucial had posted an updated firmware for the m4 drive (Firmware: 0002) that fixed an issue with "Link Power Management ("LPM")". After updating the firmware I haven't had any bluescreens yet. Granted I haven't spent a lot of time on it. However considering it was bluescreening every 5 minutes most of the evening and hasn't this morning with 2 hour usage I'd say that was the issue.

I just wanted to post this as a heads up for anyone using Windows 7 who puts a Crucial m4 SSD in their system. Eventually newer m4 drives coming off the shelf will have the new firmware on it and it won't be an issue.

Wonder if this was the same for the user in this thread:

Win7+freezing+SSD... The solution I had found was to disable LPM in the registry (good for those who have a brand without an updated firmware)
(2)701C,(1)760EL,(6)760XL,(1)760XD
(4)CD Drives (5)int floppies (3)ext floppy (4)2.1GB
(10)CF/IDE w/2 or 4GB 133x CF (1)760XL restore CD
(1)Belkin USB 2.0 32bit Cardbus (2)WPC54G(S) Wifi Cardbus
(1)Belkin F5D5020 NIC (1)Giga-Byte GN-WLM01 Wifi
(1)Backpack CD (1) Xircom REM56G-10 + misc

It certainly look similar. Good to know there's a registry fix to get by if needed. Definitely something I'll try to keep in the back of my mind in case it comes up again.
