Thinkpad W7(with truecypt) system recovery failed - PIC Warn

#1 Post by needdhelp » Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:44 pm

Hello experts.

I couldn't do a system update with the lenovo update tool nor upgrade the adobe flash player,
so I went to do a system restore using windows system restore.
Everything went fine(no power outage, etc), but when the comp restarted, it showed this:

No OS listed

Backup not listed

It seems the HDD's driver is missing? Because it is encrypted with truecrypt? I'm sure there's a backup image with window's system restore and 2 images with lenovo's system restore.

I've tried knoppix live cd to access the harddisk but they're not accessible, probably because I didn't get to enter the truecrypt startup password?

Recovery partition in HDD is deleted.
I need to access all files in the computer before doing a fresh OS install. Advice please.

I've tried the following options but it's futile.

@needdhelp: Firstly, a warm welcome to the forums. Secondly, I am sorry to hear of your problems.

From reading your original posting it seems that the recovery partition has been deleted but you don't have the recovery disks. Therefore I can only assume that you are not the first owner of the machine or you would have created a set of factory recovery CDs/DVDs.

If I were you I'd use a Linux system on CD/DVD to investigate what is there within the Windows 7 system and copy across to an external drive as much data as you can. Then reformat the HDD and borrow a copy of Windows 7 from someone to reinstall it and use the code on your licence (underneath the machine) to make it legal.

Hopefully some boffin/egghead will come along with a better idea but until then you are ucked with a capital f so you might as well do anything you can to recover important data. In these cases Linux can be your best mate.

Good luck.
