What Are The Default Indexing Locations?

#1 Post by nikki605 » Wed Sep 07, 2011 9:51 am

My T410 has Win7 Pro x64 SP1 with all critical MS updates installed. I've done various web searches and come close to answering my question, but not exactly. So I was wondering if some of you Win7 users could take a look at your Indexing Locations as compared to mine.

Mine are:
Internet Explorer History
Offline Files
ProgramData (Search; Data excluded)
Users (AppData; AppData excluded)
Windows
Windows Sticky Notes

My searching found a few websites that had a screen shot of the Indexing Options window, like this one (screen shot in step 2), but I'm not sure if that is really the Windows default since it shows Windows Live Mail.

What I'm really questioning is the ProgramData selection on my T410 as compared to the screen shot which shows Start Menu. Indexing ProgramData seems to be picking up a lot of extra junk, but there may be a reason it's included that I don't understand.

The second thing I don't understand is where/how in the screen shot, they got the Start Menu selected. :? When I click on the Modify button, I don't even see a Start Menu item to select.

Thanks in advance for any help :D

Windows Sticky Notes

Cheers.

Thanks! :)

By playing around with the Locations, I found out that when I unchecked ProgramData and it disappeared from the list, Start Menu showed up all on it's own. :?

I'm guessing you added Outlook, or maybe the entry is put in there automatically when Outlook is installed. Yours doesn't have Windows either. Hmmmm!?!

I removed Windows Sticky Notes since I don't use them.

Think the Outlook entry was added automatically during installation.

Cheers.

It makes sense that Outlook would be added during installation since most users would probably want their email indexed for fast searching.

I've done some more experimenting with mine and removed Windows as an indexed location. That seems to have cleared up some undesirable side effects I was trying to identify & eliminate. I can't remember how or when Windows was added to the list (heck, I could have done it a year ago for some odd reason and totally forgotten about it) but it is gone now.

I'll continue tweaking it, but I think I am pretty much where I want to be now. :)
