R52 Windows 7 Touchpad/Trackpoint issues

#1 Post by KMack » Sun Sep 11, 2011 11:51 pm

Hi,

I know this topic has been talked to death on other sites, but after TWO weeks and probably 25+ hours of troubleshooting I decided to suck it up and ask here.
-Please note I have tried every driver avail with every compatibility avail possible for the Ultra Nav/touchpad/trackpoint.

I have 5 thinkpads (4 windows, one linux), one I actually built from a few old ones, so I'm not new to thinkpads, also all my Windows versions are legal and registered.

I stupidly upgraded my Thinkpad R52 1860 CTO, (which I've upped the ram cards to 2 x 1), to Windows 7 - and now my touchpad and trackpoint will not work.
I have tried every 'solution' given online, and have installed and reinstalled the drivers at least 40 times (cleaning up residual files each time). I have installed a new trackpad, as well as trying the one from my R51 windows xp thinkpad, but to no avail, so it is definitely a software/driver/compatibility issue. I have also installed the drivers and changed compatibility to vista, all the tricks I can find online just havent worked.

Does anyone have a solution that actually works? I'm so frustrated. My thinkpad is not under warranty so I cant call Lenovo, and Microsoft says it is a Thinkpad issue (of course they do..)

Please don't refer me to other threads, I've read them all to no avail. I really need help and have wasted so much time, it would've been more cost effective to just buy a new laptop:(
I am even willing to partition and install linux as a dual partition, but ONLY if it means the trackpad would work in windows, as linux isnt compatible with Blackberry tethering (I wasted time trying that too..lol)

I'd appreciate ANY help from anyone who has solved this problem.

thank you in advance

Start with the basics. Is the trackpad enabled in BIOS and does it work if you boot up a Linux Live CD?

thanks for the response.

Yes it is enabled in bios, and I am using Windows 7, so haven't tried the linux live CD.

*I'm only willing to go to linux (very last resort) and partition with both if it means the trackpad will work in both OS. I tether my blackberry for internet, which regardless of what 'they' say, isnt possible in linux, so am not willing to lose windows altogether.

thanks!

Hi,

Just a thought that maybe you forgot to install the chipset driver? I have Win7 on my R52. My problem is getting the video driver in (915GM). But with the standard VGA driver from microsoft I got 1024 x 768 and High Colors.

Sounds also like maybe a loose connection of the touchpad. Just have to go thru all connetions slowly.
Just some thoughts.

Some thoughts: I would think you should have the UltraNav driver as well as the Hotkey Features Driver (which now includes the Lenovo System Interface Driver) at the minimum. Intel Chipset drivers too. Also could be a video driver issue. After installing the Lenovo drivers, try Windows Update for additional ones.

Thanks so much for the replies - yes i have the chipset driver, ultra nav driver, hotkeys etc. I've actually had luck with Windows 7 on my R51 and (bizarrely) even my little (ex-linux) 240x - BUT my R52 just wont give me any touchpad action.

I really miss the keyboard 'mouse click' buttons the most (I get a sore hand from the mouse as I'm on my laptop at least 12 hours non-stop as day), so after hearing other could use theirs after disabling the trackpad in bios, I tried that, to no avail.

SO I tried unplugging the trackpad and viola! I don't have the trackpad working, which sucks, but at least I can now use the keyboard 'mouse click buttons' - I'm sure I'll get used to using the trackpoint soon, I would've rather have used the touchpad - (I'm a PC/Mac dual user so trackpad is usually a must) - but am going away so no more time to waste on this:(

Once again, thanks a lot for the replies, I really appreciate it!

Have you tried suspending with Fn-F4? I have an odd problem but it occurs on all operating systems where the touchpad or trackpoint won't work initially but will after I suspend. I haven't seen anything similar before.

I'm having the same video driver problem for the 915GM. Have 3 R52's and 3 Dell D600's with same chipset. Is there any way to get Win 7 to work on these machines?
