Where to find Windows 7 license key on X220?

#1 Post by taob » Fri Sep 23, 2011 1:54 pm

Hi, all!

I recently upgraded from a 4.5-year old T60p to an X220 with Windows 7. I've created the boot and recovery media from Lenovo's install, wiped the drive, and put Windows 8 on it for now. If I want to restore Windows 7, I would prefer to use my Microsoft install DVDs. But to do so, I need a product key or some way of activating the license. It used to be on a sticker on the underside of the Thinkpad, but my X220 does not have that. It does not appear to be contained in any of the paperwork or documentation that shipped with it.

Is there a way to get this code? Or must I reinstall from the Lenovo-branded recovery media? I don't need or want things like the Office 2010 trial or Norton Anti-Virus packages installed. I prefer having the unembellished Windows 7 install from Microsoft, plus a selection of ThinkVantage software.

Thanks!

If you have a chance remove the battery.

Oooooooooh ahhhhhhhhh!!! *enlightened* :D

As it happens, I had done a "blind" battery swap (9-cell for 6-cell, without turning over the laptop) as soon as I received it, and I have yet to deplete the 9-cell's initial charge. Never even thought to look in the battery compartment. Thanks!
