MSFN Site Going Offline 12 August 2017

#1 Post by Callahan » Thu Aug 10, 2017 2:52 pm

Just read this a short time ago from xper.

MSFN will be taken offline 12 August 2017.

Archive and backup what is important to you. We apologize for such a short notice but we can't do anything about it. Best regards MSFN

Still alive for at least one more month, until Sept. 12, maybe longer if enough donations come in.

Same...

As for their admin's comment, "Adblockers hurting us"... the point behind ad blockers is to nix the most annoying ads. If they'd use less obtrusive/annoying ads they wouldn't be blocked (at least by default) under most circumstances...

Unfortunately, that's not true. Adblockers by default block all ads. Many websites with non-intrusive advertisements were being hit just as hard as the worst offenders. In many case, such websites would detect adblockers, and instead of blocking themselves, would instead politely ask to disable the ad block, explaining that they don't use annoying / heavy ads. I almost always disable the ad block following such a request, but if no request was made, I would not even think about it.

Adblock plus doesn't block everything by default; it's one of the things it tells you as you're setting it up as well. It lets most of the text ads through by default, a few small graphical ads show up occasionally too. :)

I guess perhaps it's that "allow non-intrusive advertising" they added? I'm not sure whether Adblock Latitude (the Pale Moon fork) has the same feature. What about uBlock Origin?

It must be so. I've only ever had experience with ABP, so I can't really offer much on the others out there...

Ads are stupid and web developers shouldn't make sites they can't pay for except joining the Googlearchy.

Amen.

No ads of any kind are welcome on my screen. It's bad enough that one can't listen to radio anymore...

Heh. Ads allow you and me to get lots of content for free, because someone else is paying for it. And we don't even have to watch them most of the time! :)

I don't understand how my viewing or clicking on advertisements creates money in the first place. I don't buy the advertised products or sign up for advertised services. :?

Its not you, its the 5% of people who acutally use the service/product.
The only acceptable use for a MacBook is to shop for a Thinkpad.

There's too many TouchPads. Too many MacBooks. Making too many problems. And not much nubs to go round. Can't you see this is the Land of Confusion.
