Down here we don't have a local processing center any longer. So, if I want to send a letter to a local post office box, I'll drop the letter in the mail slot inside the post office. From there letter will likely be sent to Little Rock AR, and then from there to Memphis TN for sorting, back to Jonesboro AR before arriving back here in my home town to be placed in the PO box ten feet from where I dropped the letter off. It usually takes 3-6 days for a local letter to be delivered.

O the other hand, I often order supplies for my business from Memphis TN. If I place my on-line order before 7 pm local time, UPS will deliver my package the next day! I placed such an order just this week at about 6:30pm, and since I was going to be near the UPS terminal anyway, picked it up there (it arrived at the terminal at 6:30am). It is nice to be this close to a major shipping hub like Memphis TN.

USPS reads the Thinkpad forums?

I've never actually seen that happen. Usually it gets stuck in the distribution center but never goes back to it. Odd :?:

That's not effecient. Think of all of the unused space in the delivery trucks.
Better is to wait until there is a full truck of packages going from the NYC distribution center in Jamacia NY to the rural Pennsylvania town of Lake Ariel (population 16,000). The package would be delivered within the year. After a few days the warehouse in NY would need to be expanded by orders of magnitude, but that would be a minor cost for logistic perfection.

jaspen-meyer, I must say I rather like your suggestion. Can we assemble a task force to decide on the most efficient implementation? I suggest that we schedule regular task force meetings at Caribbean resorts. The bill should be sent to residents of rural US towns, whose interests we would fundamentally be working in.

I think it would be beneficial to also discuss how big of a debt hole the USPS/Postal Service is in currently. IIRC, back in 2006 legislature was passed that required them to essentially set money aside for pensions of employees who are not even born yet.

The USPS is also running on antiquated equipment. The mailtruck you see every day is known as a Grumman LLV (Long Life Vehicle). They were made between 1987 and 1994. While the bodies are fairly decent (that's because they're made of aluminum), the Chevy S-10 chassis they are based on are starting to give major issues, not to mention that the USPS subscribes to the "as long as it works, don't touch it" idea when it comes to maintenance. Many have even started to catch fire due to a lack of maintenance by the postal service.

Granted, the USPS is testing trucks to replace the LLV. However, it takes years for a final decision to go through all of the bureaucracy of the USPS and Federal Govt and new trucks to be made.

I've also heard horror stories of USPS dropkicking/damaging customer packages - but I've heard equally bad things about UPS and FedEx. I've (thankfully - knock on wood) never had a package damaged in shipping, but I've had a mail carrier twirl a package in front of my face at the door when he was dropping it off. What was inside? A brand new MacBook. I did witness a clerk at our local post office decide to play basketball with a "FRAGILE" package...

Though don't place the blame on your local mail carrier (in most cases). They are rode hard and put up wet in most cases... upper management doesn't really care, and most hate their jobs. They work long hours in all kinds of weather (did I mention the LLV doesn't have air conditioning, and is aluminum?!?) and try their best to provide the best service.

Do I think the Postal Service deserves criticism? Yes - the management is horrible and (as the OP and others have pointed out) waste lots of money, as well as not maintaining their equipment or satisfaction/well being of their employees. Are the mail carriers at fault? Most of them are not - they are just caught in the crosswind.

--
Sources: I have a couple friends who are/were mail carriers. As for info on LLV, I am a part of a couple isolated groups that want to purchase them after the USPS is done with them. I've created a webpage for anyone further interested in the Long Life Vehicle...

The LLV is one thing (and interesting to read about, thank you).
What is worse is how you see mail being delivered (at least in rural areas like mine) in other vehicles.
Most of them are left-hand drive, the right-hand passenger seat is full of stuff, the driver is trying to 'hang on' somewhere in the middle, on top of the console or transmission tunnel, braking/accelerating with their left foot, steering with the left hand, and using the right hand to deliver mail in the boxes that are standing alongside the roads.
Highly dangerous if you ask me.
I have even seen cars with TWO steering wheels, where the two steering shafts are 'connected' with a timing belt or similar.
At least the LLV has right-hand drive!
Why can't they 'enforce' rural mail delivery personnel to use right-hand drive vehicles?
They should be cheap enough to import (used) from Japan!

It's actually fairly interesting you mention that. I lived in a rural area and have seen it done before.

I've actually seen three ways that they do it. They either do it the way you mention - sit in the middle and steer with one hand while dealing packages in the other. I agree, that is extremely dangerous and has always scared me. This seems the most common as they can use their existing vehicle with no mods to get in the way and possibly screw up their vehicle.

The second method is that there are some companies that produce special mechanisms to link a second steering wheel to the main steering column, as well as the brake pedals, etc. So it can be a modified "right-drive" vehicle. I've heard that some people have jerry-rigged their own systems... I don't know what to think about that.

The third is that some auto makes can produce special-ordered right drive vehicles. The one that I've seen most common are Jeep Cherokees in my area, but I've seen some Subaru and other models specially ordered to be right-drive.

I've also seen some rural delivery routes using the LLVs. As the LLVs get replaced by a new vehicle (codenamed "NGDV" for Next Generation Delivery Vehicle), I suspect that some LLVs will make their way into the hands or rural delivery drivers so that they can use a decent and safe (safe as in made for the task - no more "middle-seating") vehicle for their jobs without having to spend their own money to buy a specially-made vehicle or modify their personal vehicle. But that would make sense, so they likely won't go that route.

P.S. - It's sort of strange to see what USPS defines as "rural." At my old house, which was in city limits (and always has been), the carrier we had was a rural carrier. For those who don't know, it's easy to tell a city carrier (or CCA - their assistant) from a rural carrier (or RCA.) City carriers and CCA's have to wear a uniform. Rural carriers and RCAs, on the other hand, can wear almost anything they want.

P.P.S. - Speaking of the LLV, the LLV was produced in Montgomery, Pennsylvania - a small town near Williamsport. OP/RealBlackStuff, have you heard of that?

P.P.P.S. - For those unfamiliar, the LLV was made by the same Grumman responsible for the F-14 fighter jets, other military/civilian aircraft, and other military things. Grumman was the people behind many step vans and other trucks during the 1980s, including the ones that Hostess used. Grumman also made boats (and at one time) computer peripherals and support services. Grumman eventually merged with Northrop to form Northrop-Grumman, still a military powerhouse/conglomerate.

I've shipped iPads in USPS Padded Flat rates without any issues. Granted I will put cardboard in both sides while wrapping to give it a little bit extra strength.

For me USPS has been good, some of the sellers just take a day or two to ship ;(

Well, compared to delivery services in countries like China (domestic delivery, at least), USPS is definitely pure garbage.
That said, USPS is still better than the worst times Canada Post can be.
Around 2 years ago I ordered some TrackPoint from a eBay seller who's like 15km away from where I live, and sending it in letter mail took them 3 weeks to deliver.
