technical compatibility for 4:3 screens

#1 Post by laowai » Sat Oct 22, 2011 1:13 pm

Yes, everything has gone to hell with the 16:9s taking over and the low resolutions which don't seem to want to go away.

The oddball question is has anyone ever tried to hack a 4:3 screen onto a modern widescreen board (520s/420s) just to see if it's even possible? Is there still compatibility, can it be tweaked to work, or has it been lost entirely at this point. There are still manufacturers of the screens out there as well, it really comes down to making it all fit together in something useful.

Essentially the notion here is to do a custom-milled chassis project compatible with standard thinkpad parts. Lenovo won't make the laptop I want, cost really isn't much of an object either, just would like a heads up if anyone has tried this before time/resources are invested in it.

For testing purposes, I have hooked up 4:3 displays on widescreen boards, like a T60 4:3 panel on a Z61m motherboard. I've also hooked up widescreen panels to 4:3 T60 motherboards. Success both ways.

If you can fashion your own LCD assembly, you can have a 4:3 LCD modern computer. If you do it, post pix!

Welp, this is definitely good news. It does look though, as if fitting the assembly to the base is somewhat of an issue. Seems more doable with the 16:10s than 4:3s and might as well get the extra pixels. Chopping the height like they did does seem to leave a good 1cm gap as far as depth goes just by comparison of the T61p to the T4/500 series and it's overhang, so hurrah, something to overcome in a creative way unless I want to go completely overboard and do an entire case. The costs over here honestly don't seem to be all that bad, quality panels can be had for $30~$50 a pop and the machining or RP costs ain't all that bad either... looking like around a $500~$600 premium as long as I can supply my own cad for it... which is actually far less than I'd be willing to spend extra if lenovo would get off there asses and at least have a tolerable option available :x

At least it's nice to know that it's technically possible to fix their mistakes still... I'll probably be holding out for whatever is next in line for the releases prior to getting started in any serious capacity however.
