What's going on with NewEgg?

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 6:37 pm

Laptop hard drives (not SSDs) have gone up an average of 50-75% over the past ten days. PATA drives have gone from expensive to ridiculous.

Is this just Newegg or the market altogether? Anyone has any serious insight?

Search for "Thailand hard disk prices" in Google to get an idea about what consequences the Thailand floods are creating for HDD supply in the world market.

The prices are expected to double by december - thankfully the prices have not hit local stores yet, but I need a new power supply before I can add a hard drive, so I guess I will have to make do with what I have untill prices come down.

OK, time to start shopping for SSDs... 8) ...until this temporary insanity comes to an end.

SAMSUNG Spinpoint M5 HM160HC 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" ATA

Two weeks earlier, on 9/16/11, I got this for $49.99 incl. free shipping from Newegg.
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4EG HD155UI 1.5TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Nearly ten times the size of the above PATA, for almost the same price!

Last time I bought 40GB PATA 2.5" drives (35 NOS drives Fujitsu and Seagate 5400rpm, 8MB)) , I paid only between $15.- and $16.50 each, in May/June 2008.
Those were the days
