Anyone in USA who can solder mini USB Connectors?

#1 Post by poshgeordie » Thu Sep 20, 2012 3:58 am

I'm based in UK with a nice little sideline in repairing broken mini USB ports on Cricut Gypsys, a hobbyist handheld machine which is used to design paper patterns.

The mini-usb connector easily snaps off the circuit board with damage to the tracks and surface mount components, but for anyone who's good at micro soldering it's a relatively straightforward job to repair. The most difficult joints are two which are 1mm apart.

I'm getting a number of enquiries from users in USA with this problem, but due to the lowish value of the Gypsy the repair charge has also to be relatively low, however the high carrriage costs between USA and UK makes the repair much too expensive.

Is there anyone from USA who's good at micro soldering coz I'd be happy to pass the enquiries to you - I'm not looking for any money from you. You must be able to do micro soldering already and not someone who wants to "give it a go".

The mini-USB Connector looks like this Image

If anyone's genuinely interested I'll send photos of a typical repair and we can take it from there.

To reiterate I'm not touting for work here, merely offering an opportunity for work to the right person in USA.

The other day I needed to solder a capacitor that had gone MIA, onto a mobo.
The capacitor's size is roughly 2x1 millimeter!
I used acrylic Crazy-Glu to first glue the TINY cap to the tip of a toothpick, and let that dry properly.
Then managed to get tiny 32AWG wires soldered to each end of that cap.
Then managed to solder the wires onto the motherboard where the cap had been.
All that using a 10x magnifier.
Only took me about 3 hours...
But it worked!

Your mini connectors should be child's play compared to what I just did (but I am not interested).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff). And pigs CAN fly!

First person I thought of was you Dominic!

It's relatively straight forward for the right person.
