Seen Better Days

#1 Post by jronald » Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:25 pm

I see in my son's eyes, each day, the wonders I have squandered fortunes to possess and have sought my entire lifetime to attain. jrr 09/2011

Sometimes I feel how those look.

It reminds me of one experience with an abandoned MacBook that had been run over and assumed utterly destroyed. I salvaged a surprising amount of hardware from it outside of the planar/screen/chassis, and even tracked down the owner (facebook ftw) to return the HDD and their music collection. :)

Anyhow, who didn't wince at that melted TP? Oh, and is that round one a Packard Bell?

Looks like a collection of pictures from /r/techsupportgore.

The ThinkPad in question apparently lost a battle with a bottle of nailpolish remover (acetone). Ouch.

Looks like a coffee cup full, going by the outline on the palmrest.

I see that (aside from your being right) that it was the base of a G4, not a PB.

Jesus, some of those were almost as bad as the 386 from my school. It been running 24/7 since it was brand new. They forgot about it when they built the server rooms in the basement, and a few months ago some electrician didn't understand why and empty room was using so much power and knocked down the plaster wall... Voila!

The bugger had faithfully running some sort of DOS based server for the last 25 years. Come water, dust and mold, it soldiered on. It current been restored to working order and is displayed in the IT dept. the "museum"...

One of the most far gone computers i have ever seen was a ThinkPad R40 that had been in a house fire. It was given to me to see if i could pull any files off the HD. Although it was not directly exposed to open flame, it was in a room that was involved in the fire. So, it suffered not only extensive heat damage, but also smoke and water damage. The casing had softened and drooped, the screen was stained a brown, and the hinges were frozen in the open position. It looked worse than some of the laptops in the OP's link.

I'll be dammed if it didn't still power on & boot.

Lol some pretty cool images there. :)

The thing is though, that the Thinkpad, unlike some of the others, probably survived it.

I see laptops like this, and worse often coming into liquidation. They all get shipped to china by the palletloads, there all the chips and ICs are pulled and sold on sites like ebay, taobao, alibaba and others.

This is exactly why I source my CPUs from complete working laptops, and if you had seen what I've seen, you would agree.

This just kinda makes me think about now, it's come to the point where laptops nowadays are so cheap, and so expendable, that we can toss them around, leave them to rot, or spill water all over them, and we just toss it aside then go to the store and buy another one for $300.

Well at least... I don't. I just build myself another T60p. :)

But this reminds me of my dad's old Pentium III Dell, I basically learned how to maintain a computer from that. Over time, some of the RAM bays stopped working, it would show the system board error LED sequence sometimes, and it would randomly change the boot sequence, and we accidentally dropped it while moving and busted the case... so I botch fixed it by screwing the motherboard in an old 3ft tall AT case, and drilled holes where the I/O plate would normally go.

I still have that Dell. We don't use it, but it still works. Barely. It's one of those things where i'm the only one who pretty much knows how to work it and use it, if I wanted to.

Don't buy Dell. lol.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...
