Batuta, I agree with you 100%. I have no problem with employees getting together for such things, but they should keep it polite. Not everyone shares the same religion or holidays, and I think it is disrespectful to other people to place an unreasonable number of flyers such that one cannot help but see one or many notices whereever one goes.

This stuff really gets on my nerves. Religion is supposed to be a private affair, and I wouldn't even have minded it if they'd send out a one time corp e-mail about this stuff or just put one notification onto the BB.

Well you can thank our illustrious president George W. Bush for that. He is the one trying to shove religion down our throats.
Not that I have any problem with religion, I believe in god. I have a problem with people trying to shove things down my throat!

I don't think any major religion is necessarily bad. Actually they are great to keep our morality in check in our society as long as it is practiced moderately. What bugs me are some of the people who practice their religion without any regards to others feelings. Just trying to shove their beliefs into others with such zeal that I sometimes repel them.

Religion has been under fire alot, but you know, a person has a right to pray, to preach, etcetera. He has a constitutional right to speak and you have a right to not listen and/or speak against.

As far as flyers go, if it bugs you that much, rip it down and/or talk to the guy about it. It'd be easier and less time consuming than wining on about it. Or just put up a flyer of your own.

If things start to really become a problem and people start confronting you, draw a chalk outline of a body right outside your cubicle or office and then throw a bunch of religious flyers (you know where to get some) around and in that outline. Some dark red food dye might also add to the effect.

Hey, Batuta, if you want to have some fun, call you your HR person and tell him/her that you are concerned that the aggressize prosylitizing (sp) may be creating a "hostile work environment" in violation of the federal anti workplace discrimintation laws (Title VII) -- or that you, personally, are being subjected to a hostile work environment. (There are reported cases where hostile work environments has been found to have been created by prosylitizing, but as I recall, the behavior is along the lines of a supervisor repeatedly telling the employee that he/she is a sinner and will go to hell unless he/she repents etc.)

If you REALLY want to have some fun, fill out the form required and file a hostile work environment claim with the EEOC or the state equivalent (most states have state laws patterned on Title VII). The EEOC won't do anything except to send you a "right to sue" letter after the statutory period, but they will notify your employer about the claim.

I wouldn't try to go all legal and/or try getting anyone in trouble for this, unless you hava a boss you don't like.

It's still a public building and unless the boss says someting againt it, there's nothing you can do but confront and speak against. Also, again, if it's private property, you can't go all legal unless the boss says someting against it. You chose to go to work, nobody forces you to go to that building, though you will lose your job, but it was your choice to take the job to begin with.

Unless you own or rent that building and/ior you are these peoples bosses, you have as much right to judge whats allowed in that office building as I have to judge whats allowed in your front yard, none.

Also, a lawsuit will start a riot as well, not to mention it just wouldn't be worth the hassle, legal fees, bad reputation and all that good ol' crap. Unless you are willing to take a stand like a real man, you need to stop complaining. Either sit down and shut up or stand up and speak. When you get down to it, those are the only real options, and only one works, I'll let you figure out which one works.

You are sadly mis-informed. It's called a hostile work environment, and smart employers take steps to prevent it since it can lead to costly and embarassing legal action. Here's some reading for you to learn about it:

Good article from a respected authority in the field. For AlphaKilo470: while the constitutional free speech protection only protects us against actions taken by the government, there are other legal protections against hurtful/offensive speech by individuals, as Nonny has pointed out. Moreover, Title VII and other statutes make it illegal to retaliate against someone for complaining about speech/conduct that is forbidden by Title VII.

I personally don't have a problem with a national day of prayer being declared or even to see a discreet poster about it at work any more than I'm offended by any of the other community-related posters or announcements on the bulletin board in the cafeteria. I would, however, have a problem with getting it shoved in my face at every turn at work or being pressured into participating since my particular religious beliefs are private and my own and have nothing to do with my job performance.

And why co-op the celebration that is Cinco de Mayo? How annoying!

Wasn't thinking fully with my last few posts. Still, I wouldn't take major legal action, it just wouldn't be worth the hassle. I would, however, talk to a manager or two, then if nothing happens, possibly report it to someone that has authority that will look into things.

As for May 5th, I think that's sorta funny. Cinco de Mayo and national prayer day, man, that goes together like Richard Simmons and Little Debbie.

Well, let's look at it like this, as long as all those flyers are there, you wojn't need newspaper to line the birdcage with, you won't need rags for coffee spills (unless it's on carpet) and when you get bored, you can reach your hand out of your cubicle for a flyer and practice your paper airplane skills.

Or better yet, I'm pretty sure that you've seen the post it note cublicle prank where you wallpaper the cublicle and cover every last item in the cube entirely with post it notes, right? If not, well, I just described it and if you have not caught my drift with that and what would be very fun to do with the flyers, you imagination needs replacing.

As Ron Kuby (possibly the only card carrying Communist lawyer left on talk radio) likes to say "The answer to speech you don't like is more speech."

Personally I think I'd organize a Cinco de Mayo party at a local Mexican restaurant and put my own flyers up promising beer, tequila, tacos, and Senoritas. See who has a better turn-out.
