Yeah, we made that...

A prime example of Swedish engineering. As a previous 855 owner (even the same colour), this both breaks my heart and fills it with pride. Soldier on, loyal one!

I had only ever one Volvo, a 1600cc P544, back in the 1960s. Wish I'd still have it...
I bought it with 230K miles on it, drove it for 3 years (another 120K) and sold it for more than I paid for to begin with.
That car was indestructible!

Mine was exactly like this, black with red interior: http://gomotors.net/pics/Volvo/volvo-p544-05.jpg

When the guys in the wrecking yard have nothing else to do...

Some crazy show I caught on cable years ago had 2 competition events on the program. There was a roll-over contest where you had to drive some small car up to a certain speed on a track and then dive toward the infield where a ramp was waiting to roll the car over. The test was to see how many total times a car could be rolled before it would fail to get up the ramp. I think the winner went 5 or 6 times.

The other event was what they called "train racing" but not with locomotives. You take 3 junk cars and chain them together end to end with welded chains. The one in front has an engine and a driver who has control of the steering and the throttle. He has no brakes. The rear car has no engine or steering, just brakes and a brakeman. The middle car is empty. You get several teams of these trains and race them on a figure-8 dirt track. It's the job of the guy in front to drive the train, but the guy in back who has a better view of what's coming gets to stomp on the brakes to try to avoid a collision. Collisions are inevitable.

1996 or 1997 850 wagon with all wheel drive.

Observing the style of wheels and "awd" badge, the engine was 2.3L 5 cylinder with large high pressure turbo.

Observing the video, the transmission is 5 speed manual.

In the US, this car would be badged as the 850 TURBO in 1996 and 850 T5 in 1997.

The sad part is that 850 TURBO/T5 was never offered with 5 speed manual transmission in the United States.

You normally wouldn't think about that happening when an auto-maker is designing a car. Volvo apparently did.

I've recommended Volvos to my friends multiple times... I've only heard fairy stories from owners of these things. I do agree they're very sturdy machines. Unfortunately I had to be Mr. Cheese eater and buy a pampered German car. But I think Volvos, especially some of the older ones, are really overlooked. Because whenever teenagers or a teen's mom thinks of a first car to get, the first word that pops in their head is "Japanese". It's tragic. Because a lot of people who buy Japanese cars brand new, most of the time, it's because they don't care that much about the sort of car they're getting. So they don't take as good care of their car as... say, a Volvo owner.
Trying my hardest to collect Thinkpads, but college and being broke kinda gets in the way. However...
