My new machine (LARGE PICS)

#1 Post by QWERTY Andreas » Fri Feb 22, 2013 5:49 am

Soo... I did well in a exam, and rewarded myself with a new toy

I pulled the trigger and bought a Fujitsu F-07C. It costed me 621$, including shipping and excluding taxes and import. It is the smallest X86 capable computer in the World, as far as i know.

Some highlitghts:

Very high DPI: 296 DPI! (yep.. that is 50% higher than the MBP retina!)
Multitouch: Well.. its rather cool.. but not very usable at the very small screen
Can be charged with a standard phone charger

Some downsides:

Bad batterylife
Symbian side is limited
No USB port

So far, i am very happy with the device. Its small, its snappy..

I posted it here, because it is not a thinkpad. But i thought some might find it interesting :-)

And... i have too many UMPCs

Best regards

This reminds me of when I got my hands on a PsiXPda- that thing was cool. Ran Windows 7, had a webcam, and had 1024x600 res, like yours. It also was about the size of a DSLR camera without the lens, and a little bit skinnier. It was pretty heavy though. The Atom processor and the GMA 500(a VR tech chip with an Intel driver) were it's downfall, and what eventually led me to sell it. It was still really cool to have something like that.

UMPCs are awesome-they really turn heads nowadays, because everyone just has Android devices and smartphones. I also really just like the idea of having something that insanely powerful and capable, in a package so small.

That's an awesome device man-good buy. Hope you enjoy it :)

I googled it. Battery life must be absolutely horrid... I mean, from the specs, its a miracle it lasts long enough to boot up.

Its cool though. Love these "pocket rockets". Had a Sony UX UMPC back in the day. Bought it after seeing it on Stargate. Stupid impulse buy. Sold it a few months later. But I regret it now that i know what it capable of with a few mods.

Sybian was a stupid move, but maybe someone can rectify that with x86 android or some other mobile linux dist. It has plenty of potential though.

Wow, this is exactly what I have been praying for! I didn't know such a phone existed! However, it would be nicer if the screen were closer to 5".

Is it easy to hook it up to an external monitor? What's the highest external resolution that it can support?

#Medessec:

I dont think its really the hardware that is the problem TBH. It is the driver support from Intel, that is complete crap. IE. the GMA600 on this device is actually very potent - however the drivers are not.

#DaKKS:

I haven't tested it in real life yet.. But sadly it should only get 1-2 hours of batterylife in Windows mode on the standard battery (1400 maH, closest to one hour). A mugen battery should bump it to about 3-4 hours (3200 maH, but thick and expensive at 100$)

But im looking forward to see what it really get :) And it can be charged with a standard USB charger.. So its at least easy to carry one around.

#Pianowizard:

It is actually a old phone (from mid 2011). The screen is just a Little too small to use it for longer periods.. But making it bigger would be too big for the pocket IMO
As it is, it cant be hooked up to a external monitor. However it is possible to get a dockingstation that makes it possible. It uses HDMI and i -think- it support up to 1080P ( http://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/ ... 07c_02.jpg ). However i can't test since the dock is just too expensive for me :)

You are showing the Imageshack thumbprints here.
You can add links to the larger pictures in your posting, or make the thumbprint 'clickable' so they then show the big picture.

I do agree- the GMA 500 is actually the same VR chip you'd find in an iPad, so they *should* be very capable. Intel's the people to call on writing a driver for Windows though... and I guess they don't care much for those using Windows with this hardware.

A quick google shows that the GMA 600(what you've got) is the exact same thing as the GMA 500 that was in my PsiXpda, but it's GPU is clocked at double the speed. Real shame... since the hardware on there has so much more potential. Regardless-the GMA 500 on my PsiXpda not only ran Windows 7 smoothly, it also ran web, video, and other basic things quite neatly for something that small and low-powered.

I'm pretty sure you can only expect more from yours. :)

I did some testing, and overall its fine. However it can't handle games. At least i could not run a lot of old games.. And i tried "Company of Heroes" - neat slideshow, but impressive it would "run" it after all. But for videos, surf and ither basic tasts it should be enough.

I just tested the battery with some casual surfing, and i think it lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes. I didn't had anything to take the time. But that may vary (disabling multitouch etc. could potentially help it). It was clocked at 600 MHz during the "test" (sufficient for browsing). Not too bad - but nothing impressive. A mugen battery could come "handy" in most cases.

I think it's just mostly when we Windows people want to try 3D applications and other things that really isn't meant to run on something that small. Most games I had would just throw back "This driver doesn't support (blah blah 3D tech)" or "Your hardware is not sufficient to run this game." I finally got Halo CE working on the PsiXpda, but it ran with no effects on and at 10 FPS. Also-the controls were awkward with the touchscreen and bezel trackpad.

One problem with UMPCs is because they're not mainstream, parts and accessories go out - quickly. I don't know if it's going to be the same with yours, but another reason I sold my PsiXpda is because batteries, spare styluses, chargers, these are all things that I had NO CHANCE of finding, anywhere. The device was extremely rare.

If I were you, I'd make sure I had at least one extra stylus, and one extra battery, just in case. If you plan on using it for some time. I'm sure you've already had this thought though.

One of the good things with the F-07C is that it uses rather standard accessories:
Micro SDHC Card
Micro USB charger
No stylus (capative touchscreen)

So the only real "problem" is the battery. These cost about 40$, so its not too bad (but neither cheap). But i will use it some weeks, and see how it turns out! If it is a "keeper" then i will consider a new battery.

I have never been excited about UMPCs, but this one is different in that it also functions as a phone! I don't like the layout of the keyboard though, since the letter keys are arranged in straight columns instead of slanted like on a real computer keyboard. After using my HTC Touch Pro2's fantastic keyboard for 3 years, this Fujitsu phone's keyboard wouldn't work for me. On my Touch Pro2, I can type faster than many people can type on computer keyboards.

Don't get too excited about the phone mode. It runs a japanese symbian version made for the carrier "NTT Docomo". It uses some services called "i-mode" that only Work in Japan (and a few other countries with a speciel dataplan)
So on the phonemode there is no internet avaible. This limits the phone to the very basic tasks: Calling, texting, notetaking, stopwatch and so on. So overall the symbian mode is just too limitied to be considered a "smarthphone" outside japan.

The keyboard is very nice. I haven't tried the Touch Pro2, but this one have some very nice keys. However it is a little cramped (but all sliderphones with QWERTY-keyboards i have tried was cramped, in my opinion)
