But that's not bad considering I've gotten 2 years use out of it

How much has your ThinkPad depreciated?
I was curious as to how much my T40 was still worth, so I went on eBay and took a look at used T40s with about a year warranty left. Only $750-800 for configurations slightly better than mine. I guess my T40 is worth only about $700 on the open market now

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
I don't think that is bad at all. Try selling a Dell 2 years later
To me, one of the biggest plus's of going with IBM is decent resale value 12 - 18 months down the road...assuming you take good care of the machine. Kind of like Rolex in the watch world...they aren't the flashiest models but they hold their value extremely well.

Your ThinkPad will depriciate at a fast rate at firt, but then it starts slowing down. My age old ThinkPad (carbon dating can't tell you how old mine is) is worth about $100 or so dollars. Once your ThinkPad hits below the $500 mark, it's value will stay pretty constant for a while.

I noticed there are a lot more people using T42 & T43 posting than T40.K. Eng wrote:I was curious as to how much my T40 was still worth...
Do people upgrade their systems whenever new systems come out?

I try to get at least three years out of a machine, five if possible. My upgrade was from a T22 to a T42p, hardly every new model.
