After the Windoze tax, its still cheaper!

Unless I missed something, the Ubuntu machine is not a Thinkpad or even a Lenovo. The second link is to an Edge is arguable is not a Thinkpad. In my mind it is not.

I would do neither of those. A T61 or T400/T500 used, at least 4 GB RAM and a SSD is a much better option and can be done for cheaper. Matter of fact my second T400 with 8 GB RAM and Vertex 2 - 60 GB SSD ($30 in the local classified) only cost me about $260 Cdn all in. Runs Linux Mint 14 pretty darn good.

The cheaper (older)machine is my 2nd point. I have a z61T that runs like a poked ape on steroids with uBuntu.

My primary point was the fact the Edge is $100.00 or so cheaper with the Winblows tax added. Some how I have to believe they are not selling a whole bunch of the Linux laptops at the price they are offering.

Economies of scale. You're looking at millions of laptops built annually (Lenovo) versus thousands of laptops sold...ever (System76). There is also a Microsoft subsidy that drives cost down on low-end machines for volume manufacturers. You see mainstream manufacturers with Linux offerings more expensive than the exact same machine with Windows for that reason.

You buy a System76 machine to make a point. I wouldn't do it, since I've only ever bought used Thinkpads which have excellent Linux / OpenBSD support after 2-3 years. Still, enough people are doing the System76 / Zareason thing (which is more like a mom and pop company) to keep these companies in business.
